rebelracewriter
Run For The Money 3 @ Grand Prairie Speedway, presented by Alliance Motorsports, 7/4/08 By J M Hallas Grand Prairie, Tx., (July 4th, 2008) As part of a big Independence Day racing weekend, Grand Prairie hosted the "Run for the Money 3" part of a series of bonus money races on the 1/4 mile semi-banked 1/4 mile. This weeks incentive was $1,500 to win for the unsanctioned Modifieds feature winner, along with a Dash for Cash pitting the eight top finishers from heat action for $250 From Cox Conservation. Bonus money was added in the other three regular classes with the IMCA Southern Sportmods and Street Stocks paying $500 to win, Bombers $300 to and two Powder Puff races paying $100 to win. Shives Shuffles off to Grand Prairie Pay Day North Texas hot shoe, Blaine Shives showed he could get the job done even it was driving a team car of Marty Stanford. Shives patiently pursued early leader Nathan Sugg taking the the top spot on lap 6. Shives then held off the challenge from Mike Dillard until lapped traffic separated the two in the final laps giving Shives some breathing room at the finish. At the drop of the green on the 20-car, 25-lap, $1,500 to win Modified main event, N. Sugg beat polesitter Shives into turn 1 for the lead. Shives fell in line second with Dillard and Glenn Leuschner side by side for third. Dillard secured the spot on lap 2 while Kevin Rowland took fifth from Jared Webb. Rowland then picked off fourth from Leuschner on lap 4, as Troy Taylor charged by Scooter Bates for sixth. Shives got inside N. Sugg on lap 5 and grabbed the top spot on lap 6, while Leuschner and Rowland still battled for fourth. Dillard and N. Sugg were wheel to wheel for second on lap 7, as Rowland held on to fourth and left Leuschner side by side with Taylor for fifth. Dillard completed the pass on N. Sugg while Leuschner and Taylor stayed tied together at the rub rails. At halfway it was Shives, Dillard, N. Sugg, Rowland and Leuschner in the top five. Shivs and Dillard then began to check out, with Rowland taking third from N. Sugg. Rowland slipped high on lap 14 giving N. Sugg and Leuschner the chance to close back up. Shives ran up on traffic during lap 15 allowing Dillard to sneak back up on the leader, while Casey Jordan, Bates and Rodney Stanford battled it out for sixth. Dillard was on Shives' bumper as he got hung up behind Carl Kincaid. Shves finally cleared the lapped car, but Dillard faced the same problem trying to get by. This gave Shives the opportunity to build a lead over the final laps to take the checkers in the Stanford Trucking, R&B Excavating, Alliance Motorsports, Day Motorsports, Southwest Engines, Dirt Works Chassis. “I just stayed smooth on the throttle and out of trouble,” Commented Shives. “You try to run your own race, but you do look over the competition. It works both ways.” “He(Nathan Sugg) had the line on the start. I just had to get in line and follow until he made a mistake. That was the only thing I could do. You just wait and see what the track is going to do and hopefully hit the right set up.” Modified A-main 1. 9 Blaine Shives 2. 66x Mike Dillard 3. 4 Kevin Rowland 4. 89 Glenn Leuschner 5. 56 Troy Taylor 6. 12 Scooter Bates 7. 1R Rodney Stanford 8 1* Casey Jordan 9. 15 Jared Webb 10. 88x Clyde Dunn jr. 11. 5 Sean Jones 12. 87 Justin McCoy 13. 8x Bryan Sugg 14. 04 Bobby Ruffin 15. 01 Carl Kincaid 16. 6L Steve McMackin 17. 48 Jim Pearcy 18. 9N Nathan Sugg 19. 703 David Smith jr. 20. 45 Shane Killingsworth Dash for Cash(10 laps) 1. 66x Mike Dillard 2. 9 Blaine Shives 3. 12 Scooter Bates 4. 6L Steve McMackin 5. 89 Glenn Leuschner 6. 4 Bobby Malchus 15 Jared Webb--DNS 9n Nathan Sugg--DNS Modified B-Main(Top 4 to A-main) 1. 5 Sean Jones 2. 703 David Smith jr 3. 04 Bobby Ruffin 4. 87 Justin McCoy 5 2 Greg Frazer 6. 48 Jim Pearcy 7. 561 David Horner 8. 31 Kirk Accord 9. 2R Ryan Williams 10. 1x Chase Doughty 11. 30 Jimmy Lee 39 Rick McCommas--DNS 74 Jason Sartain---DNS Modified heats(Top 4 to A-main, top 2 to Dash for Cash) 1. 9 Blaine Shives, 4m Bobby Malchus 4 Kevin Rowland, 8x Bryon Sugg 2. 9n Nathan Sugg, 15 Jared Webb, 1* Casey Jordan, 01 Carl Kincaid 3. 66x Mike Dillard, 12 Scooter Bates, 56 Troy Taylor, 45 Shane Killingsworth 4. 89 Glenn Leuschner, 6L Steve McMackin, 1R Rodney Stanford, 88x Clyde Dunn jr. Troy Taylor and Tyler Killingsworth led the 20-car, 25-lap IMCA SSM main to the initial green. Taylor got a big jump as Killingsworth was slow to take off stacking up the outside row. Killingsworth, with a broken transmission, and Jon Grindstaff hooked bumpers an ground to a halt on the back stretch. After the reline-up Taylor and Tommy Davis jr. paced the field to the start. Taylor and Davis stayed side by side, with a three wide battle for third. Davis got the lead from Taylor, with a quick caution for a bumper on th track brought the action to a halt. On the restart Davis inched away with Taylor and Greg Frazer wheel to wheel for second. That battle continued until yellow waved for a spin by Dylan Petty. As green waved again Taylor secured second with Bobby Ruffin getting fourth from Kevin Rowland. Tristan Dycus followed by Rowland and got along side Ruffin. AS Davis increased his lead, Ruffin and Dycus continued to stay side by side until lap 9 when yellow waved. Grindstaff drifted to high in turn 3 got into and up on the guard rail. The single file restart saw Davis again put some distance on Taylor while Ruffin and Dycus picked up where they left off, wheel to wheel for fourth. At the halfway point it was Davis, Taylor, Frazer, Ruffin and Dycus holding the top five spots. Taylor dramatically changed his line and looked to be gaining ground on Davis. Yellow rebunched the field on lap 14 after Robert Stevenson found the wall in turn 1. Back under green, Taylor hung on to Davis while Ruffin looked inside Frazer for third. Ruffin fell back in line and was again challenged by Dycus with Jacob Pirkle getting inside Rowland for sixth. Up front Davis shook off Taylor and was edging away, while Rowland Pirkle were still side by side for sixth. With five to go Davis had rebuilt a lead over Taylor. AS the white flag waved Davis had nearly a ½ straightaway lead over Taylor and cruised to the win in the Racecar Products, Marshall's RV, Wellspun Auto Supply, Davis Racing Chassis, Tommy's Towing, Smileys Chassis. “Against a field like this, you've just got to have your chassis working right,” replied Davis. “Of course, a lot of luck too. Starting up front helps a bunch. With these guys coming in I just race my own race.” IMCA SSM A-Main, 25 lap 1. 7 Tommy Davis jr. 2. 56 Troy Taylor 3. 2F Greg Frazer 4. 121 Bobby Ruffin 5. 94 Tristan Dycus 6. 40 Kevin Rowland 7.41 Jacob Pirkle 8. 94x Glen Leuschner 9. 8m Matt Wester 10. 91 Brian Rowe 11. 5P Dylan Petty 12. 14j Joey Fisher 13.14 Michael Newhart 14.16 Robert Stevenson 15. 9 Bennie Everhart 16. 13j Ray Brown 17. 02 Jon Grindstaff 18. 21 Darrell Turner 19. 47 Justin Hossler 20. 44 Billy Burt 21. 45 Tyler Killingsworth IMCA Southern SportMod heats(Top 4 redraw for A-main) 1. 94 Tristan Dycus, 9 Bennie Everhart, 121 Bobby Ruffin, 17 Tommy Davis jr. 2. 56 Troy Taylor, 2 Greg Frazer, 45 Tyler Killingsworth,13j Ray Brown 3.02 Jon Grindstaff, 5p Dylan Petty, 14 Michael Newhart, 40 Michael Bowles In the 25-lap Street Stock feature Clint Frideley jumped into the lead with Ted Crone and Robert Hill in pursuit. Battling for fourth Jake Upchurch and Michael Sterling traded a little paint as they ran side by side. Jackie Hefty moved up keeping Upchurch pinned low to take fifth on lap 4. Hefty then got inside Sterling for fourth while Upchurch and Bubba Davis were door to door for sixth . By lap 10 the top three had separated out with a gap back to Sterling and Hefty still going at it for fourth. At halfway it was Frideley, Crone, Hill, Hefty and Sterling in the top five. Upchurch again challenged Sterling, this time while dicing through traffic. Crone was closing in on Frideley for the lead on lap 15, while Hefty was reeling in Hill for third. In the pack, Sterling and Upchurch were again side by side, with Hefty now looking inside Hill for third. With five to go Frideley had two car lengths on Crone as Upchurch finally got past Sterling. The lead duo caught slower traffic on lap 21 tightening up the lead battle. Hill spun on lap 23 to bring out a caution. Under yellow Crone pulled to the infield from second. Once back to green it wasn't long until Sterling spun to bring caution back out setting up a green, white, checkered finish. As green waved Hefty looked on the high side of Frideley for the lead. The two were door to door coming to the white flag with Hefty getting the advantage, then holding off Frideley to take the victory. Joe Rosher got the early lead as the top five quickly broke away from the pack. Jeff Sonntag tried to move inside Rosher on lap 3 but ended up losing second to Michael Bowles. Sonntag and Kenny Garrett got together and ended up in the turn 1 wall on lap 4. On the restart, Bowles pushed too high with Gary Ramsey getting by for second. A multi-car tangle on the front stretch sent Wes Milliorn jr. around on lap 5 to bring out the yellow. The race had just gone back to green when the leader, Rosher had something let go and drop fluid on the track. Tony Moore, Chad Rodden and Randy Corn got collected as they piled into the back stretch guard rail. Finally back under green, with Ramsey now in the lead, the top 4 pulled away from second four-car group. Chris Clark slid high on lap 9 giving up third to Garrett, who missed turn 3 with water spewing on the right front tire from an overheating engine. Ramsey and Bowles then had a huge lead until lap 13 when Corn tangled with Donald Spencer sending him around. Ramsey got a good jump on Bowles as green waved again, but Bowles closed the gap with four to go. Clark fell back into a battle with Moore for third wit two circuits remaining. On the white flag lap, Jeff Mueller found the turn 1 wall, while Ramsey was holding off Bowles for the win.
