R.I.P. Dan Cook

legend is putting it mildly, a true icon in South Texas sports broadcasting, many of today's folks could learn watching some of Dan's old stuff. His story about Fritz Von Erich was a classic, in an interview, Fritz was showing Dan the infamous claw hold, then wouldn't let go, Dan had to reach down and grab a death grip of his own to get him to release!

He will be missed that's for sure.

The best sportscaster around, not just in SA. Many still use many of his old sayings, the most popular, It Ain't over til the Fat Lady Sings. Too bad San Antonio still has yet to find anyone to replace him. :(

Upon learning of the Thursday passing of Dan Cook in the Friday morning edition of the San Antonio Express-News, a few specific memories of Dan come to my mind.

1. In Dan's office when I brought Indy Car driver Johnnie Rutherford up there for an interview just days prior to a USAC Champ Car race at Texas World Speedway. As expected , Dan wrote a great pre-race piece.

2. On a KENS-TV sportscast, his naming of "it ain't over till the Fat Lady sings".

3. Dan's apparent continuing journalistic affection toward fellow Texan A.J. Foyt..

4. Watching Dan chain smoke cigarettes and wondering how long he could live doing that ... 81 years was the answer.

5. Dan was certainly a one of a kind journalist and TV sportscaster.

R.I.P. - DAN COOK

Don Harris, Sports anchor Ch 4, summed it up pretty well in this mornings paper. He said that Dan Cook retired and he has not been replaced yet. I will add to that. Probably won't ever happen either. Dan was definitely one of a kind. :(

Only one other SA sportscaster ever came close to Dan and yet he was still miles away, and that was Johnny Moore, KSAT 12 in the 60s. You would see Johnny at Pan American Speedway just about every Saturday night.
