Stewart grabs fast time again; Kruger draws pole position for tonight’s TSRS race

( Houston , TX ) Fourteen-year-old Jake Kruger will be the first to tell you that he and his Kruger Motorsports Team use current TSRS points leader Heath Stewart as their “benchmark.”

Stewart ( Del Valle , TX ) once again set the pace during TSRS qualifying tonight (Saturday, June 21), this time for the feature race at Houston Motorsports Park , the “TRACKTEK 75” which is part of the Fiesta “Super Fast Blast” race night at HMP.

TSRS qualifying started at 4:48 p.m. Central with hot, humid conditions and the sun burning down hard on the track. Stewart posted the fast time of 14.941 seconds on his second lap; his time missed the TSRS track qualifying record of 14.664 seconds by .277 seconds.

However, it was Kruger who got “lucky” afterwards and drew the “#1” block during the post-qualifying drawing (the top six qualifiers in each race draw for position after qualifying), meaning the Bastrop youngster – who was fifth-fastest during qualifying – will start tonight’s feature race on the pole. Robert Barker ( Boerne , TX ), who qualified third-fastest, drew the #2 and will start outside of Kruger on the front row.

Ironically, it was at the only other TSRS race at HMP to date (May 17th) that Kruger won his first-ever late model race.

“We were really hoping to be the fastest qualifier tonight,” stated Kruger. “But I left a little bit out there (on the track) during qualifying. The track was so hot that the car lifted a little coming out of Turn 4 of the 3/8th-mile asphalt track.” Several drivers, including Dillon Spreen (Boerne, TX), Brian Moczygemba (San Antonio) and Robert Barker (Boerne, TX) agreed that Turn 4 was “slick and difficult” in the hot sun.

Some drivers, including Moczygemba, Chris Schild (Leander, TX) and Stewart commented that driving into Turn 1 was difficult during qualifying. “I actually lost a little bit going too hard into Turn 1 on the first lap (of qualifying),” stated Stewart. “I eased up a little bit on the second lap and got through (Turn 1) much better. Still, it was slick coming out of Turn 4; I just guided the car through that corner.”

Stewart added, “We’ll go out and run a hard race and see what happens.”
