(Dec. 18) – Canyon Raceway’s Winter Series for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modifieds opens Jan. 10, 2004, for a seven-event run. The eighth annual series continues the next six Saturdays, concluding on Feb. 21. Any races lost to adverse weather will be made up the next day. Each 30-lap feature pays $1,000 to win. A $5,000 point fund has been established for the top 15 drivers, with the series champion getting a $1,000 share. Points earned at the Winter Series will be applied to national and D&M Performance Western Region standings. The series championship will also count as a 40-point bonus in 2004 national standings. “Canyon Raceway has been the place to be since 1988 when it comes to sanctioned Modified racing in the Phoenix area,” said I.M.C.A. Vice President of Operations Brett Root. “We don’t expect that to change.” The series is sponsored by Barnett Harley-Davidson Motorcycles and Hollywood’s Body & Paint Specialists. Pit gates open at 10 a.m. each Saturday, with hot laps starting around noon and racing at 1 p.m. Pre-entry fees of $50 per event can be mailed to the track at 4934 West McLellan, Glendale, Ariz., 85301.
