texasprd
How do you know what size of onboard fire bottle to use? I know bigger is probaly better but in a full size hobby stock would a 5lbs bottle be enough? Don't take the following as gospel - call the companies that make the systems, or read the rulebooks of the "name" sanctioning bodies (including NHRA) and see what they recommend/require. I read everything I could find in Stock Car Racing and now Speedway Illustrated on safety, because I wanted to put the safety systems in the drag car I was building at the time. I believe the minimum recommendation I saw was for a 10 lb. system - 15 or 20 lbs is better if you can find them and have room. The more suppressant the better (ever seen a fire die down, then flare up again?). And nozzle placement is important, too. Again, research this with the experts - the recommendations I saw were to put the nozzles in the driver's compartment - not on the engine or fuel cell (if all the gas has drained out and is under the cockpit, a nozzle in the trunk area does you no good). Again, please research these topics - I'm going from memory on this and the thinking may have changed over the years.
