Wilson Rocks to 600 Nationals Prelim Victory

Lonnie Wheatley, LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (September 14, 2007) – Skiatook, Oklahoma's Jerrod Wilson was the class of the field as the Second Annual 600 Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires kicked off at I-30 Speedway on Friday night.

Wilson wired the field in the non-stop 25-lap preliminary feature, besting a total of 125 entries from 19 different states as well as Australia to lock himself into Saturday night's $10,000-to-win 600 Nationals finale.

Also locked into Saturday's finale were the balance of the top six finishers, which included Oklahoma's Scott Sawyer, defending race winner Travis Senter, Jr., of Osceola, AR, California's Stan Yockey, Illini shoe Derek King and Indiana's Jonathan Hendrick.

Making it a Sooner State sweep of victory lane was Broken Arrow, OK, shoe Darien Roberts, who won the 15-lap Horizon Mini Sprints Restricted "A" Class main event.

While Wilson led Friday's preliminary feature in wire-to-wire fashion, he passed virtually everything in sight during the evening's qualifying action. Starting 12th in the second of ten heat races, Wilson charged all the way up to second and ranked second in passing points to Chris Andrews following heat race action.

Gridding the second of five qualifying races in tenth, Wilson blasted through the pack in short order and took the win to earn the pole position for the feature event.

Oklahoma City's Jason Lair was slated to start alongside Wilson in the feature event, but Senter moved up to the front row outside when Lair's engine gave way in the staging area moments before the field aligned.

Wilson outgunned Senter for the point at the drop of the green flag and never looked back. Reaching lapped traffic by the ninth circuit on the high-banked, ¼-mile clay oval, Wilson never faltered while slicing through traffic the rest of the way. "One down, one to go," Wilson commented in victory lane.

With Wilson out front, Sawyer took advantage of a Senter's progressively tightening machine to take the runner-up slot in the final laps. Senter held on for third in the non-stop affair, with Yockey a close fourth as King held off Hendrick for fifth.

Pennsylvania's Jake Murphy just missed an assured starting spot by finishing seventh, while Chris Berreth advanced from 15th to eighth. Aaron Reutzel raced from 20th to ninth, with 17th-starter Travis Elliott completing the top ten.

In the Horizon Mini Sprints feature event, Roberts outdueled Shane Fletcher over the middle portion of the race en route to capturing the checkered flag. Roberts and Fletcher are locked into Saturday night's $1,000 to win feature along with Shelby Henson, Brian Ritter, Devon Huff and Trent Taylor.

Twenty-five Horizon Mini Sprints brought the total number of cars in competition at I-30 Speedway on Friday night to 50.
