Johnson Shoots for 14th Win in Saturday's ASCS Regional Showdown at Fast Trax

 

 

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (September 10, 2007) – Last year, Jason Johnson raced to American Sprint Car Series victory lane on 17 different occasions en route to National Driver of the Year honors.

 

 

 

Closing in on that mark after four Regional triumphs over the past three weekends, "The Ragin' Cajun" takes aim on his 14th overall ASCS triumph in Saturday night's ASCS Coastal vs. Gulf South Regional Showdown at Fast Trax Speedway in Chatham, LA.

 

 

 

Currently ranked third in O'Reilly ASCoT National points, just 98 markers out of the lead, Johnson of Eunice, LA, has racked up seven Regional feature wins to go along with seven National triumphs.

 

 

 

While Johnson tries to add another notch to the victory column, Michael Dupuy and Skip Wilson lead their respective Regional forces into Saturday's clash.

 

 

 

Dupuy holds a 94-point edge in the inaugural ASCS Coastal Region championship chase while Wilson holds a narrow lead in a tightly bunched ASCS Gulf South Region points battle.

 

 

 

Hailing from Mesquite, TX, Wilson is just two points ahead of Missouri City, TX, shoe Brandon Berryman in ASCS Gulf South points entering Saturday's card, with defending series champion Gary Watson of Beaumont, TX, just ten points out of the lead in third.

 

 

 

Chris Sweeney of Channelview, TX, is 32 points out of the lead in fourth, with Greg Rilat of Texas City, TX, another 16 points back in fifth. The balance of the current top ten in ASCS Gulf South Region points includes Jimmy Brooks (College Station, TX), Tommy Bryant (Montgomery, TX), Ray Allen Kulhanek (Conroe, TX), Johnny Miller (Burleson, TX) and 16-year-old Kathryne Minter (Bedford, TX).

 

 

 

The top eight in ASCS Gulf South points are separated by just 70 points.

 

 

 

Amite, LA, hotshoe Dupuy has the ASCS Coastal Region points lead in hand on the strength of five feature wins, with Michael Herrington of Gonzales, LA, giving chase in second. Robert Casada of Petal, MS, is third in ASCS Coastal Region points, with Todd Fayard of Saucier, MS, and Shane Morgan of Biloxi, MS, rounding out the current top five.

 

 

 

The balance of the current top ten in ASCS Coastal Region points includes Timmy Thrash (Gulfport, MS), 15-year-old Hunter Phillips (Gulfport, MS), Lane Whittington (Denham Springs, LA), Chris Sweeney (Channelview, TX) and Terry Gray (Bartlett, TN).

 

 

 

Saturday's ASCS Coastal vs. Gulf South Regional clash at Fast Trax Speedway fires off at 7:00 p.m.

The ASCS Coastal Region 2007 slate consists of 17 events at ten different tracks throughout Mississippi and the surrounding area including portions of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Texas.

 

 

 

After ten rainouts this year, the 2007 slate for the ASCS Gulf South Region now consists of 14 events at eight different tracks throughout Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

 

 

 

The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series. With a dozen different Regions in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, ASCS will sanction approximately 240 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout at least 30 different states and Canada.
