Ramey Rolls Into ASCS Sooner Points Lead with Lawton Win

by Lonnie Wheatley

LAWTON, OK (September 8, 2007) - With the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region championship battle at full tilt, two-time series champion Kevin Ramey raced to his third series win of the season by wiring the field in Saturday night's 25-lap feature at Lawton Speedway.

Danny Jennings was hot on Ramey's heels as the lead duo raced through lapped traffic in the final rounds, with Ramey surviving a close call by narrowly missing a flipping Sherman Davis with the white flag in sight.

"I used every bit of brake the car had there, I was just afraid I was gonna kill the motor and be a part of the caution," Ramey explained after surviving the green-white-checkered run to post his 17th career American Sprint Car Series Sooner Region feature win and fifth series win at Lawton.

With the win aboard Tom Willis' Wells-powered Commercial Music No. 7m Eagle, Ramey took a narrow three-point lead over fourth-place finisher Cody Branchcomb with third-runner Brian McClelland just seven points off Ramey's lead pace with a handful of events remaining.

Starting from the pole position, Ramey outgunned fellow front row starter Jennings for the point at the drop of the green flag and set a torrid pace throughout with Jennings on his tail tank all the way.

With Ramey and Jennings setting the pace, Andy Shouse held down the third position while McClelland climbed from the tenth starting position to fourth by the tenth lap with Branchcomb steadily racing forward from 14th.

Into lapped traffic by the sixth round in the fast-paced affair, Jennings pulled alongside Ramey on at least a pair of occasions but the Fort Worth, Texas, racer was able to fend off the challenges.

Ramey briefly slipped away to a five car-length advantage after 15 laps, but Jennings surged back into contention by the time Ramey reached a gaggle of lapped cars with just five laps to go.

Jennings shadowed Ramey's every move through lapped traffic, awaiting the slightest of bobbles from Ramey over the frantic final laps. But as the lead pair raced off of turn four with the white flag in sight, the red lights flickered when third-runner Shouse dumped his machine turn two.

At the same time, Sherman Davis climbed a slowing car's right rear and flipped directly in front of the leaders with Ramey barely dodging the incident.

With clear track ahead on the race's lone restart, Ramey held off Jennings over the final charge to the wire to post the win with Jennings settling for second in front of McClelland. Nursing an overheating engine on the late-race restart, Branchcomb battled past Matt Covington on the final pair of circuits to snare fourth with Covington rounding out the top five.

Gavin Punch charged from 17th to claim sixth, while Shouse made a quick return from his tipover and finished as the final car on the lead lap in seventh. J.P. Bailey was eighth, with Sheldon Barksdale and Travis Jenkins completing the top ten.

Covington, Jenkins and Jennings each claimed heat race victories.
