rebelracewriter
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thursday, September 6, 2007 FEATHERLITE FALL JAMBOREE OPENER GOES TO KROHN SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (Sept. 6) — Things went exactly according to plan for Jason Krohn Thursday night. He came into the opening night of the 9th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree as the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series points leader, and he finished the night as the points leader. In winning the main event, the farmer from Slayton, Minn., opened the gap over his closest rivals with just two events remaining in The Hunt for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. While Thursday’s contest was the 31st visit in six seasons to the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., by the O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds, it was Krohn’s first at the high-banked 1/3-mile oval. The win was worth $2,000 as Krohn bested 113 other drivers in perhaps of the most talent-rich gathering of Modified aces ever. Krohn started the Holley “A” Main from the inside of the second row, overtaking polesitter Dean Mahlstedt on the eighth lap and leading the remaining 28 laps to score the victory. Despite 30 cars taking the green flag on the lightning-fast, multi-grooved track, the race nearly went caution-free — a testament to the caliber of drivers making the main event. A caution on lap 33, however, slowed the action and erased Krohn’s advantage to give his chasers hope with a final two-lap sprint to the checkered flag. Contact going into turn 1 on the restart, however, delayed the final dash and found Mahlstedt and fellow top-10 runner Willy Kraft exiting the race, along with AFCO Pole Award winner Steve Arpin. As it does so often, the cream rises to the top and Thursday’s nightcap was no exception. For the restart, the top-4 in O’Reilly USMTS points were running first (Krohn), second (Jon Tesch), third (Jason Hughes) and sixth (Kelly Shryock). The field kept it clean on the next and final restart as Krohn won the drag race to the first turn. With the white flag waving, Krohn, Hughes and Tesch battled three-wide out of turn 2 for the lead. Krohn inched ahead going into turn 3 and carried enough momentum to secure the win. Tesch edged Hughes, who started 16th, by a nose for second while Brad Waits took fourth and Tim Donlinger grabbed fifth. Shryock finished sixth after winning the first Real Racing Wheels “B” Main and starting 19th. Seventh through 10th went to Mark Noble, 24th-starting Tommy Myer, Dan Bohr and Tommy Weder Jr. While there was a lot of passing throughout the field, nobody passed more cars than Weder, who earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors after starting 29th. By winning the main event, passing two cars and leading the most laps, Krohn scored 105 points, while Hughes earned 104 and Shryock 94. The result: Krohn clings to a 30-point lead over Hughes and Shryock, who are now tied for second with just two races to go. Friday’s Featherlite Fall Jamboree will kick off with the annual Jamboree Golf Tournament in the morning, followed by a second night of screaming on-track action. The O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds will again have a 26-car feature field, with the winner’s share of the purse doubled to $4,000 with a minimum of $250 going to each driver making the main event. WISSOTA Midwest Mods will also be on the card as they race for $400 to win and $45 to start. Fans, drivers, crews and families will put a lid on Friday’s festivities with the annual Karaoke Night … open to everybody, it’s racing’s answer to American Idol. On both Friday and Saturday, breakfast and lunch will be served by the Bear Creek Church Men’s Club in the hospitality area from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All meals will be served as a free will donation, with all proceeds benefiting the Bear Creek Men’s Club. Also on Friday, Haulmark Motorcoaches, a Universal Trailer Corporation, will provide a complimentary pork sandwich brunch for all drivers from 2-4 p.m. at the Haulmark Motorcoaches display near the right-hand side of the pit entrance. Saturday’s explosive finale will feature the hottest Modified pilots in the nation battling for a spot in the 9th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree main event for the O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds. A field of 30 cars will start the main event three-wide and 10 rows deep as drivers battle for a $6,000 top prize. All drivers that make the big dance will earn at least $600. And if that wasn’t enough, non-qualifiers will have a chance at one of the 24 spots in the Non-Qualifier “A” Main, which carries a $2,000 top prize and pays $200 to start. In addition, WISSOTA Midwest Mods will duel for $500 to win and $50 to start their main event. This year’s Featherlite Fall Jamboree will be the final National Event for O’Reilly USMTS and will award points in The Hunt for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. Not only will we produce a ninth Featherlite Fall Jamboree winner, but we will also crown the ninth O’Reilly USMTS national champion after Saturday night’s finale. The Featherlite Fall Jamboree is made possible by the great racers and fans, as well as our event sponsors: Featherlite, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, 61 Marine and Sport, Dirt Doctor Trucking and Haulmark Motorcoaches.
