MYER GOES WIRE TO WIRE FOR O’REILLY USMTS WIN AT CHATEAU RACEWAY

 

 

 

LANSING, Minn. (Aug. 31) — Nobody could out-draw Tommy Myer and nobody could out-race him either as Myer took a wire-to-wire victory Friday night as the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series invaded the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn.

 

 

 

The top-8 drivers in Home Pride Passing Points drew for their starting positions in the 40-lap Holley “A” Main, with AFCO Pole Award winner Zack VanderBeek drawing first and Myer, who was eighth in Home Pride Passing Points, getting whatever was left over. After the other seven had drawn, Myer was left with the pole position, and he made them pay for it.

 

 

 

Myer rocketed straight to the lead, and despite a lot of pressure and side by side racing throughout the main event, led every lap en route to his second O’Reilly USMTS win of the season — his sixth feature win this year at the 1/3-mile Lansing oval.

 

 

 

In the early going, O’Reilly USMTS points leader Jason Hughes hugged Myer's rear bumper and tried to take the lead away several times, but Myer held his ground each lap. Meanwhile, Hughes had to fend off Richie Gustin Jr. to maintain his runner-up position.

 

 

 

Despite four cautions in the first half of the race, just three of the starters had fallen out of the race. The fifth caution of the race came out on lap 30 when Ryan York of Racine got into the turn 3 wall. On the restart, Kelly Shryock, who had moved up to third from a fifth row starting spot, got a good jump and moved past Hughes for second.

 

 

 

As the field was completing lap 35, Gustin had problems and was moving slow down the front straight away heading toward the pits when he was rear-ended by Josh Mattick. Both drivers exited their cars and during the red flag while Hughes also pulled to a stop, climbed out of his machine and signaled for a wrecker. As his No. 12 Modified was pushed away, a large oil spill was left behind under the car showing exactly what the problem was that ended his night.

 

 

 

The race restarted and the final five laps were wild as Shryock pulled up alongside Myer. However, Tim Donlinger had moved to third after starting 13th, and was darting inside and outside on both of the top two runners, making the action three wide for the win.

 

 

 

Myer held his line and took the win with Donlinger nosing out Shryock for second as they raced to the checkers.

 

 

 

Greg Skaggs and VanderBeek rounded out the top-5 finishers. The Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors went to Jon Tesch, who started 24th and finished eighth after barely making the call to start the feature.

 

 

 

With his runner-up finish, Shryock closed the gap on Hughes and Jason Krohn in The Hunt for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. Hughes garnered just an 18th-place paycheck after failing to finish while Krohn held on for a ninth-place finish and overtook Hughes in the points battle (950 to 947) with just four events remaining. Shryock is third with 908 points, followed by Tesch (867), Myer (814), Tommy Weder Jr. (807), VanderBeek (800), Skaggs (799), Steve Holzkamper (682) and Scott Green (667).

 

 

 

On Saturday night, the Masters of Fast invade the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., for the 3rd Annual Labor Day Dual, and 11th race in The Hunt for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. A top prize of $2,000 is up for grabs, with all main event starters earning at least $250. Joining the rugged O’Reilly USMTS road warriors will be the WDRL Late Models.

 

 

 

No license is required to compete with the O’Reilly USMTS, but licensed drivers enjoy such benefits as pay scale bonuses, increased tow money, points fund eligibility and contingency awards. The superior American Racer KK-704 racing tire is the Official Tire of the O’Reilly USMTS, but top-flight drivers who simply want to chase the cash and the glory (no points) are welcome to utilize the Hoosier G60 tire.
