landlord Posted May 4, 2007 Report Posted May 4, 2007 My 12 year old come home from school with this one:3 guys walk up to a hotel clerk and ask how much to rent a room. The clerk tells them $30.00 So each man paid $10.00 each(3x10=$30.00)The guys go on up to their room, meanwhile the shift supervisor comes in and tells the clerk she overcharged and reminds her of the special they were running for $25.00 The clerk gives the bellhop $5.00 and tells him to refund the gentleman their money. On the way up to the room the bellhop can't figure out how he's going to divide $5.00 between 3 people,So what he did was give each guy $1.00 back making the amount each guy paid $9.00 and pocketed the other $2.00.The question is if 3 guys paid $9.00 thats a total of $27.00 The bellhop kept $2.00 If you add that to the $27.00 thats only a total of $29.00 WHAT HAPPEN TO THAT EXTRA FRIKIN DOLLAR???????? Ford27 Posted May 4, 2007 Report Posted May 4, 2007 This is like slight of hand but with numbers....half way throught the equation you change the starting spot fom 30 to 27 by the way its worded.....so there is no extra dollar 25 to hotel 1 for each guy and 2 to the bellhop = the original 30. It's all in the wording. Quote

It's all in the wording. Agreed that there is some thing in the wording - But, if you have 3 people who pay $10 each ($30 total) and each gets back $1, each of the 3 people has now paid only $9 ($27 Total). The difference between $30 and $27 is the $3. But if the clerk kept $2 of the $5 refund...then someone did make an extra $1 I agree with Rosie... Quote
rebelracewriter Posted May 4, 2007 Report Posted May 4, 2007 Too much thinking, too early in the morning I'll try this one later today. Quote
NickHolt Posted May 4, 2007 Report Posted May 4, 2007 And I have 11 fingers. Start on the left hand and count your fingers backwards 10 - 9 - 8 - 7 - 6. You can clearly see that you have counted 5 numbers. Count them - there are five numbers there even though you ended on the number 6. Moving on, everone knows you have five fingers on each hand, so add the 5 fingers on your right hand to the 6 you ended with above. 5+6=11! Nick Quote
REBELRACER Posted May 4, 2007 Report Posted May 4, 2007 there is no missing dollar..............the hotel got $25 for the room...........the bellhop took $2 for himself which added together is $27.........each guy got a buck back which if you add the $3 to the $27 you get $30......... Quote

If 9x3=27 and the bell hop kept 2 there is something wrong.Harvard calls it a mathematical error Quote

Problem is that you are trying to divide by 3 AND arrive at an even amount - which can't be done. Two of the guests should have been charged $8.33, and the other $8.34 in order to arrive at $25 for the room. Since they were overcharged, 2 of them should have received a refund of $1.67 and the other $1.66. The remaining $2 the bellhop took is actually the (.67x2)+.66 left over from what the guests should have received back. or look at it like this: By multiplying 9x3 you get $27. If the bellhop wants to be honest and distribute all of the money evenly but has no math skills, his next step will be to try and give them $2 each (or charge each guest $8.00) ....and he can't do that because 1) he doesn't have enough money 2) 8x3 is $24....which is $1 less than room rate.
