xcellracing
Any word on the guy that got hammered? Joe Armendia was one of them said he had a knot on his head and leg, managed to convince them to let him race anyway and turned out a 4th all beat up and all. Thats a racers spirit right there. rebelracewriter
Buddy, not to start rumors, but I "heard" the other person bit off the end of his tongue----OUCH!!!! Joe had a big ol' knot on his forehead and leg. He actually said he felt worse in the car....so much for that myth about feeling better once you get in your car. Budman
Then we should all consider him very lucky if that's all. He took a hell of a hit. I've been looking at that configuration they have down there for several years and thinking they need a much higher, much stouter fence down there. I've seen whole cars catapult end over end over and through fences like they have down there now. You've been around these tracks long enough. I'm sure you have too. Brad
For us that weren't there can someone elaborate on this accident. Thanks
Budman
Loose wheel/tire into, over the fence at the end of the front straight into the pits.
bigfat
A wheel came off a car in the Street Stock race and went thru the pit stands fence in the middle of turns 1 & 2. The fence hit Slow Joe and the tire or fence hit the other fellar, he got the worst of the incident (he was associated with the crew for the #20 Hobby Stock). The other fellar was taken off in the ambulance. Mona Turner tended to him and said that he had a pretty nasty gash along him jaw and on his tongue. Pretty severe but not life threatening from what I gathered.

dano36
Folks at THR need to be thankful that accident did not result in worse injuries. Granted they were bad enough but about two to three weeks ago, a similiar incident occured at the Mercer Speedway (PA) and killed two crew members who had went to the fence to watch the race. I understand that both were hit by fence boards when the stock car ran into and over it. I agree a higher and stouter fence needs to be built there for better protection of those working in the pit area. All of racings better safety features are in the cars but that does not really make race car driving perfectly safe. The big danger now has switched to the pit areas where some safety features have been ignored. My prayers for a quick recovery go to those that were injured and hopefully we will see them all back in two weeks.
Kathy
The EMS guys said the tire hit the fence and the fence hit the guy causing the injuries.
Budman
Doesn't really make much difference WHAT hit them, now does it.

The fence kept the wheel/tire from penetrating and the wall stopped Terry's car. I was thinking that maybe some type of rail to keep spectators off of the fence might be a good idea. If the guys had been standing back away from the fence a few feet, they would have been OK.
rebelracewriter
So it was a tire/wheel off Tschoerner's car and not one from the tire barrier along the pit road fence??? Just need a clarification.
Kathy
I think that is right Reb. The tire off Terry's car hit the fence and fence hit the guy. And Budman I guess you are right it doesn't matter what hit him. But like Chase said maybe they need to be back from the fence more. The fence did it's job. Budman
That would be correct Jay. That's what I saw happen. Not trying to argue here. Just want everybody to be as safe as reasonably possible out there. Where did the tire/wheel eventually come to rest?
landlord
Most tracks don't let you get right up to the fence for just that reason.A liitle border tape should be able to solve that problem.
mr ed
Tie, wheel, brake drum, axle flange hit the fence, the fence stretched, but held the the tire inside the track. The guy that took the worst hit got hit by the trie wheel and fence in one motion, pretty much about chest high. The other guy got hit in the head by the fence as it stretch into the are we were all wathing from. I was very luck to see it comimg and move away, even though i did not see what caused the on track incedent. I then made sure the guy that got hit stayed down and did not move around, had some one else keep him still and called thru the fence to the safety crew that was on the track, to come to the pits. When watch from that area one should be very alert and also never turn away from the track. I hope both individuals are ok! Mr Ed

maz1438
Rule #1. NEVER turn your back at a race or baseball game!! Very Very True. I can only hope that the gentleman that got the worst of it is/will be ok. I feel alittle fortunate, due to the fact that i was standing about 5-7 feet away(On the fence line) and saw it coming and moved quickly enough out of the way to not get hit by anything. I also found it really remarkable that the #79 Armendia was actually able to even race that night after this incident.
Txenergy
I'm glad to hear they are going to be o.k... It was pretty bad looking... I'm glad the fence did it's job...I just seen a tire, smoke and parts flying....
