V6 Dodge 1500

Any opinions would help.

 

Got a v-6 1500 Dodge that is running very very rough. Idles with the whole truck shaking. Step on the gas and it sounds like its choking ( the motor is not cutting out it just sounds like it is gasping). It has 105,000 miles on it, changed the spark plugs and water pump (had a leak) and the plugs made no difference although number 1 was no gapped correctly when removed.

what year is it ..does it have a check eng light ....96 or better you can go to autozone for a free scan ..does it have power when driving it ..if not check and make sure the exhaust is flowing .... also egr ..

Get some carb cleaner and clean the throttle body,also there is usually a throttle bypass valve in the same area that gets carboned up and may stick,take it off and clean it good to free it up. If it is a automatic this will make you think the transmission is about to go when the valve is sticking. Have you checked for vacuum leaks? I am not sure what yours has,but most newer cars have a plastic intake,look it over good for cracks. Advance autoparts will hook up the code reader also,if you have a check engine light on. I couldn't tell you where the MAPS sensor is located on your truck,but that could be a problem as well,also hope nothing is cracked if it got hot. I hate to admit to this,but make sure the plug wires are all on in the correct locations,I had a full size van and managed to get 2 mislocated and still idled smooth,but no power.

Not to knock AUTOZONE . MAKE SURE THE PERSON THAT USES IT KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOULT .. THE OTHER PROBLEM IS AUTOZONE WONT GIVE THE STORES THE REAL SCANNERS THAT A PERSON WHO.S IN THE KNOW CAN GO IN AND ACTUATE A TPS .AIS MOTOR OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT .IF THEY DID YOU COULD AND WOULD LOOSE MONEY FROM THEM DOING SO ....IM GLAD THEY DONT , FOR I WOULD SPEND ALL DAY OUTSIDE CHECKING CARS .. everyone duck and run for cover, Charlie and I agree on something! As Charlie and others have said, scan tools are a baseline. They will point in a direction.

 

I'd say CAT or Valve. Either bent or backed off.... You can sometimes tell on an exhaust valve if you hold a dollar or piece of paper up to the tailpipe it will draw the dollar/paper to the tailpipe.(not push it away)

 

Dodge is real funny about their computers and tuning. My tuning guru friend is at an open road race this weekend. If by Monday you haven't figured it out, PM me and I'll ask...

converter on the exhaust may be something to check on.

what happened with this truck? talked to my friend, we agreed either CAT, Muffler or vacuum link. Maybe on a stretch a bent valve... Also, possibly O2 sensors?

 

Agrred also to put it on a code reader to get any codes...
