Dillon Spreen opens season in Houston this weekend

Boerne, TX (3-15-07) –Dillon Spreen, a 12-year-old Boerne (TX) native who won the Lonestar Legacys championship last year, will run at Houston Motorsports Park (HMP) this weekend as part of the track’s “Speedfest ‘07” series.

Spreen Racing Team co-owners Greg and Cherie Spreen made that announcement today following the news that San Antonio Speedway closed for this weekend because rain flooded out the speedway, canceling this weekend’s racing events.

“We’re anxious to start running for the 2007 season,” Cherie Spreen said. “It’s a shame that San Antonio Speedway got eight inches of rain, but we’re sure track officials will bounce back in time for next weekend. Meantime, we decided to run this weekend at Houston Motorsports Park.”

“Dillon will run in the Houston Allison Legacys series this weekend,” added Greg Spreen. “Dillon said he likes running at San Antonio Speedway because it’s a fast track. But he also loves Houston because of the high banking at that track. He looks forward to the challenge of HMP because it’s a bit tricky and he wants to learn to master that track.”

The Spreen Racing Team had a very busy off-season. The team bought a late model car that was owned by Billy Becka and built by Ervin Breiten, Jr. owner of Oval Components of San Antonio. Breiten, Jr., a former late model driver himself, is currently the crew chief for 17-year-old Cody Smith of La Vernia (TX), who’s running in the ASA Late Model Series.

“We bought the former TSRS Late Model car from Breiten, but all we really want is for Dillon to get some seat time in the car,” Greg Spreen stated. “The car – which is ASA legal – is almost ready for Dillon to start practicing. We might let him run it in the Texas Stock Car Spectacular (Thunder Hill Raceway), but that’s only if everything goes right this season and that opportunity falls into place.”

Dillon Spreen is 12 years old – he’ll turn 13 on May 29th – and is a seventh-grader at Boerne Middle School South. Information on Spreen can be found at www.dillonspreen.com.
