O'Reilly ASCoT The Month Ahead

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (March 2, 2007) The chase is on! And in the chase for the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National championship, worth $50,000 to the victor at year's end, each race along the way counts.

The chase began in late January with East Bay Raceway Park's 31st Annual Winter Nationals with Gary Wright capturing the $10,000 winner's share in the Ninth Annual Ronald Laney Memorial on January 27. Wright and Terry McCarl split the preliminary feature events.

And, in just two weeks, the chase begins in earnest as the series fires back to life with a pair of Spring Nationals events at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX, on March 16-17, and then Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway on March 23-24.

Over the course of the year, the series is currently slated for 46 nights of racing action at 24 different tracks throughout 16 different states, with in excess of $1,000,000 to be doled out in purse money and point fund over the course of 2007. Another handful of dates are still pending.

Hailing from Hooks, TX, Wright got the early jump on a potential fourth consecutive O'Reilly ASCS National title, but will have to fend off the likes of 2006 National runner-up Jason Johnson, 2003 National champion Travis Rilat, 2000 National champion Wayne Johnson, 2005 National runner-up Darren Stewart, 2006 Rookie of the Year Nick Smith, 2005 Sooner Region champion Sean McClelland and Rookie of the Year contenders Foster Landon and Chris Schmelzle among others to claim the crown.

O'Reilly ASCoT State Fair Speedway History:

State Fair Speedway has hosted 20 ASCS National Tour events since 1994, with 16 events in Oklahoma City since the track was reconfigured prior to the 2002 season. Gary Wright has won six of 16 feature events since the reconfiguration, with Kevin Ramey and Jason Johnson the only other driver to score multiple wins since that time.

The last time Gary Wright didn't start an ASCS National Tour feature event, it was at State Fair Speedway on May 9, 2003, when an accident while en route forced Wright's absence. Since that time, Wright has racked up three series titles and has started a series record 134 consecutive ASCS National Tour feature events.

Louisiana's Jason Johnson swept last year's Spring Nationals in Oklahoma City, an event that attracted 59 entries. Overall, Johnson won three of four ASCoT events at State Fair Speedway in 2006, with only a Gary Wright victory in June denying Johnson total Oklahoma City domination.
