Tafoya, Stanford split Winter Series Modified mains

By Rory Pierce

WITTMAN, Ariz. (Feb. 4) – Regan Tafoya and Alex Stanford both took home $1,000 winner’s checks in a two-day Winter Series twinbill for IMCA Modifieds at West Valley Speedway.

Tafoya made the trip from New Mexico to top Saturday’s show while Sunday winner Stanford towed in from California.

Randy Harrison took and held the lead as the first half of the opening night 20 lapper went green. With eight laps remaining, Tafoya caught Harrison and passed for the lead.

Lap 16 saw a three-car entanglement, which eliminated all involved. J.J. Harpole Jr., Shawn Zelenka, Derek Kopp and George Fronsman completed the final top five.

Night two had Garrett Steitz start on the pole but he was passed before the end of lap one by Stanford, who never looked back. Multiple yellows in the first three laps slowed early action.

The caution flew on lap 10 and again at lap 18, setting up a green, white, checkered finish. Steitz gave chase the final 17 laps, but had to settle for a close second. Harrison, Charley Brown and Zelenka were the remainder of the top five.

Texan Kenneth Graves won Saturday’s Jeff’s Performance Southern SportMod main after taking the front spot from Zack Hamilton on the fourth circuit. The race was slowed by back to back yellows near midway before going clean and green the final 11 laps, with Graves cruising to the win.

Geoff Hatch took second with Jeff Jennings third.

Sunday saw Ryan Bard sweep the day, taking both the SportMod heat and main events. Bard took the lead on lap three from Randy Eitel. The race was slowed by just two yellows in the back half of the 20-lap contest.

Graves was second, followed across the line by Hamilton.

Four dates remain for the Modifieds in the Winter Series schedule. The next event will be Saturday, Feb. 10. The Southern SportMods have two shows remaining and will race on the final weekend of the Winter Series, Feb. 24-25.

The Modified Winter Series champion will join the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational.
