(November 24, 2006) – Citing a need to join a national sanctioning body to help maintain their momentum in the short track world, Houston Motorsports Park has joined as a Level I participant in the ASA Member Track program. This is the first racetrack in Texas to become part of the ASA Member Track family. “I think that we have found a big plus with the ASA Member Track program,” said Graham Baker who is co-owner of Houston Motorsports Park (HMS) with his brother David. “We are finding that Dennis Huth and the national organization of ASA have been really helpful in working with the short tracks in the United States. Our drivers and fans are very enthusiastic.” HMS is conveniently located 20 minutes from downtown Houston and only 15 minutes from Bush Intercontinental Airport. This puts more than 4.5 million people within a short drive to one of the finest short tracks in the southern United States. “We are working hard to build up our spectator base and have a tremendous number of people in very close proximity since we are close to downtown,” said Baker. “Our location is a big plus and the association with ASA will help get our name out there even more.” Further adding to the potential fan base are 15,000 new homes and seven schools which are being built within a five-mile radius of HMS over the next five years. The entire area is developing rapidly and HMS is poised to capitalize on the area’s growth. The track itself is one of the jewels in the short track world. The HMS facility consists of a 3/8-mile paved oval and a 1/8-mile NHRA-sanctioned drag strip. The oval has high-banked concrete turns and asphalt straights, “just like Martinsville (Speedway)”, according to Baker. During the season, the regular program runs every second Saturday night and has eight divisions, including ASA Late Models, Modifieds, Legends, Hobby Stocks, Thunder Roadsters, Allison Legacys and Texas Trucks. The 2007 season will open March 15-17 with the inaugural SpeedFest ’07 presented by Pepsi, an event not unlike the famous Snowball Derby which the Bakers hope to grow in stature and prize money each year. Special events include visits by the Texas Super Racing Series, a regional Super Late Model tour. HMS has long been in the public eye, first opening as a dirt track in 1977 and known then as Big H Speedway with the World of Outlaws as the headlining show when they came to town. The track was paved in 1996 when it was known as Houston Motor Speedway. In July 2002 the Bakers took ownership of the facility and have hosted a number of well-known touring series including the American Speed Association National Tour, the NASCAR Elite Series and the USRA Super Late Models. In 2005 Graham and David were bestowed the “Lanny Edwards Award” for excellence in short track race promotion. This is presented annually by Texas Motor Speedway and Edwards to a facility in the region that has provided both growth and a positive race experience for the fans and competing teams. “Graham and David Baker have established a truly professional operation at Houston Motorsports Park that provides fans in the Houston area a family-friendly venue to watch big-league racing,” said Eddie Gossage, president of Texas Motor Speedway. “It (was) an honor for Lanny Edwards and our speedway to recognize their great accomplishments in short-track promotion.” Dennis Huth, president of the ASA Member Track program, holds the two brothers in similar esteem. “It is remarkable what Graham and David have done in the few years that they have owned Houston Motorsports Park,” said Huth. “It is a huge honor in the short track community to be known as a ‘Lanny Edwards Award’ winner. mudpacker Posted November 25, 2006 Report Share Posted November 25, 2006 I have a couple of questions, dont know if this is the right place to ask, if not who would know the following 1. What is the end of the year points pay from ASA? 2. Is there an entry fee for the cars? 3. Does ASA award points based on each track or does racing at multiple tracks help? 4. Oh and Winter Series has the "Texas Truck Series". what rules will the truck series be following? what motor will the trucks be running? are the trucks running only a winter series? Thanks!
