NickHolt
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 9, 2006 Contact: K-MAC Sports, 512.417.9414 Lonestar Legacys title belongs to 12-year-old Boerne resident I admire Dillon Spreen for not sand bagging, as he had the 2006 Championship locked up before the race; but drove hard through out the race to prove, he is the man. – Written by Lonestar Legacys series director Bob Riley on the series’ official web site, http://www.lonestarlegacy.cc, after the Oct. 28th Texas Stock Car Spectacular at Thunder Hill Raceway. BOERNE, TX (11.8.06) Twelve-year-old Dillon Spreen (Boerne, TX) ran the entire 2006 Lonestar Legacys season like a champion. Accordingly, Spreen celebrated his 2006 Lonestar Legacys series championship – which he clinched just by starting the series’ last race Oct. 28th during Thunder Hill Raceway’s 10th Annual Texas Stock Spectacular – last weekend at the NASCAR weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. Spreen was one of three drivers – Legacys runnerup Jake Kruger and TSRS Late Models Rookie of the Year and championship runnerup were the others – who met NASCAR driver Scott Wimmer and spent over an hour with the driver of the #66 Brewco Motorsports driver. It’s been quite a week, even for a 12-year-old. “It feels pretty good to win the championship,” Spreen stated. “It was something I wanted to do this year. I only ran part-time last year; this year things definitely went our way and we’re very proud. I need to thank my sponsors – Spreen Racing Engines and South Bay Real Estate Development.” As for the meeting with Wimmer, Spreen said, “Mr. Wimmer was quite nice to all of us. We appreciate him taking the time out of his busy schedule to meet with us. He really gave us some good advice as we get ready to make our plans for next year. As for next season, we’re going to go out racing and have some fun and hope to win some races in whatever series we’re running.” Spreen set fast time during qualifying at THR but started eighth due to the invert. He quickly made his way up the field and was running second to eventual race winner Jeff Weir. But even more impressive was the fact Spreen had an “unwanted, uninvited” visitor in his race car during the feature race. “They laid coke syrup in the corners early in the afternoon,” said Spreen Racing Team co-owner Greg Spreen, Dillon’s father. “It started attracting bees and during the (Legacys) feature a bee made it’s way up into Dillon’s car. Eventually the bee got into Dillon’s helmet and stung him. He radioed in that there was something in his helmet biting him, I told him I didn’t know what we could do. He just kept racing; that’s pretty amazing for a 12-year-old to put up with. Finally, during the caution he swatted the bee out of his helmet.” Greg Spreen, a former driver himself, reflected on his son’s championship. “We’re so focused on the future we’re already looking at what’s next. We have to move on to the next step in Dillon’s career. We’ve shifted gears – it’s a small stepping stone (for the future). We’ve been racing our whole lives; the championship is great, I’m very proud of Dillon and what this team accomplished.” Dillon Spreen added, “My mom and dad worked very hard. My dad was great with all the work he did on the car. My mom gave me a lot of support on and off the track; her support was crucial to my consistency this year.” The Spreen Racing Team is represented by K-MAC Sports Productions. The Spreens are considering their plans for next season and an announcement will be forthcoming. Information about Dillon Spreen can be found at the Spreen Racing Team web site, www.dillonspreen.com.
