Gural has had the nickname of “Mr. Spectacular for several years due to his success in the annual season finale event at Thunder Hill, having won on five different occasions. But now, Mr. Spectacular has a new nickname, CHAMP! Gural began the season back in March with quiet dreams of adding a touring championship title to his resume. Gural had a “Spectacular” year adding two more wins to his career resume. There were only three races this season Gural missed a top three finish, showing the consistency of a true champion. As the green flag flew on the final race of the season, Gural and Cody Smith were separated by a single point, meaning whoever finished ahead of the other would be crowned 2006 champion. Smith looked like he might be on his way until an incident on lap 71 cut down a tire, forcing him to the pits and to the back of the pack with only four laps to go. All Gural had to do at that point was finish the race to win the championship. “I told you in Houston last weekend it would come down to who was the luckiest,” said Gural after the race. “This is a great feeling, but not as good as if I would have been able to bet him (Smith) in the race. These two cars are so equal. I wish I could have got around Bobby (New) so Cody and I could really race, but it just didn’t happen. We were a little looser off the corners than I like, but it rolled pretty nice all evening.” Gural holds the record for most wins in the series having captured eight victories during his two full time and two part time seasons with the series. Before the season started Gural had already decided this would most likely be his final full time season behind the wheel due to family and business commitments. “Our business, Austin Mobile Marine, is growing and I need to spend more time managing it. Plus, our daughter will be three this year and I want to spend more time with her,” continued Gural. “I wasn’t going to tell you guys that back in March, but this was the goal all season. It started to crumble a little bit there in August but we just did what we needed to do and stayed with it and it finally came back our way. It was those two bad races that we had that made it this close. I know it was good for the fans to see a close championship race and it looked like with four laps to go Cody was going to win. Cody is a super talent and will win more championships over his career.” The next stop for Gural and the Texas Super Racing Series will be the annual post season awards banquet.
