abrungot
Ok.. many at the spectac. were on slicks.. Thoughts about the tires and SS's running them next year?
Truck99
We were not any faster on the F53 than we were on the 970 the last time we qualified. Webster was about a tenth faster, so we may have left a little on the table. The only benefit to the racers I could see would be the availabilty of take-offs from the LM teams. This would likely decrease overall tire sales, but it could certainly benefit the LM and SS teams who developed a relationship for buying/selling take-offs. TGural
Our experience with this tire is 1)cost a lot to run them, 2)they puncture easily, and 3)they don't last very long. I'd would stay with the 970, even for the LMs...my opinion. I also believe, the 970 tire keeps the driving more competitive. Tommy
SSCHUCK
I agree with MR. Gural the 970s last longer and would keep the driving more competitive if LMs ran them. On a side note big CONGRATS to you Tommy on a great season.
hray
Here's the scoop on the F53 vs. 970. The F53 is a soft compound 8" slick with a 2 ply sidewall. It is designed for 1, maybe 2 races and that's it. They have the same runout as the 970, but the 970 is a 9" treaded tire using a harder compound. They wear better and have about the same grip because of the extra width. If properly inflated, lap times should be the same for either tire. Some of the east coast teams shave the 970's, then treat them and they are faster than the F53. I'd stick with the 970 until you get into the LM and SLM classes where you buy tires every race and treat.
