rebelracewriter
The Texas Super Racing Series Late Models came into the final race for 2006 with veteran, Tommy Gural, leading rookie, Cody Smith by a mere point. In qualifying Smith looked to be the best as he posted the fastest time, then drew the number one spot, with another long time racing campaigner, Bobby Joe New drawing the second spot for the 75 lap feature. When green waved, Smith got a big jump, while the pack accordianed behind him causing damage to front of David Sevilla. The jump was deemed, too good, by race officials and the field was relined for a second start. Smith and New stayed side by side through turn 1 with Smith first out of turn 2 with the lead. Craig Sellman kept New on the high side to grab second. New fought back and was trading a little paint with Sellman when Andy Wojtaszcyk spun in the pack on lap 2 to bring out caution. The top five of Smith, Sellman, New, Beau Bukowski and To. Gural began to put distance on Ian Webster and 2006 NASCAR Late Model track Champion, Joe Aramendia shortly after the race went back to green. Leland Waddell got by Robert Walton on lap 8 to snag eighth place. The top five was shuffled on lucky lap 13 as New got second from Sellman while To. Gural got by Bukowski for fourth. Further back in the field, Bill Hamilton and Colt James both got by Walton for ninth and tenth on lap 14. Sellman would also lose a couple more spots on lap 16 when To. Gural and Bukowski both got under him. Smith had built a good lead over New by lap 20, while Aramendia and Waddell were moving forward getting past Webster for sixth and seventh. Aramendia then picked off fifth from Sellman. As Waddell tried to get by Sellman the two made contact getting Waddell sideways. Waddell was able to regain control and keep the spot. As Smith stretched out his advantage, Aramendia was continuing his charge, taking fourth from Bukowski on lap 25. New lost even more ground to Smith when got into the slower car of Hamilton, but got break a few laps later when Michael Cullen spun to bring out a caution and rebunch the field. Halfway came during the yellow showing Smith, New, To. Gural, Aramendia and Bukowski in the top five. On the restart, the top three all stayed nose to tail and were into lapped traffic several laps later. Wojtasczyk was trying to get out of the leaders way when spun on lap 44. All the lead group were able to get past without damage. Once back to green, the top three were still chained together and quickly put distance on the field that was split by lapped cars. To. Gural started to turn up the heat on New for second and tried on successive laps to get under New as both lost ground to Smith who was inching away. James grabbed seventh from Webster on lap 62. Up front, New and To. Gural had fallen back in line and ran down Smith with ten to go. Lap 66 saw the yellow wave when David Snokhaus and Sellman went around together in turn 3 to set up a short dash to the finish. Behind the lead trio, Aramendia and Bukowski had their own personal battle going on for fourth as they rubbed, tapped and traded the position. The crafty veteran, New was now putting pressure on the youngster Smith with five circuits remaining looking low for the lead. New got inside Smith on the back stretch, Smith looked to throw the block but ended up getting the worst of it as he spun. Smith would pit under yellow to repair some damage. Back under green, To. Gural was pressuring New for the lead, while James joined the fight for third with Aramendia and Bukowski. New got a car length margin on To. Gural in the final laps with James getting around Bukowski for fourth. As the checkers waved it was New in the Southside Wrecker, ACM Paint & Body, Chevy Monte Carlo snaring the win. To. Gural secured the TSRS Championship with his second place finish. TSRS Results (TOTALLY UNOFFICIAL) 1.1 Bobby Joe New 2. 9 Tommy Gural That's all I'm sure of after tech.
