FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 27, 2006

12-year-old Spreen ready to claim Legacys title

Dillon Spreen, a 12-year-old Boerne resident, is looking at a pretty nice week this week.

First, Spreen received an outstanding student award from Boerne Middle School.

Second, the talented youngster looks to clinch the Lonestar Legacys title – his first series championship – as the series wraps up the 2006 season at this weekend’s 10th Annual Texas Stock Car Spectacular at Thunder Hill Raceway (THR) in Kyle (TX).

The talented driver has 739 series points and carries a 52-point lead into the race over 13-year-old Jake Kruger (Bastrop). Basically, Spreen will clinch the title just by qualifying then starting the feature race.

Ironically, Spreen – who hasn’t raced in six weeks – is just as anxious to drive his car on the track as much as he is to win the championship.

“I missed racing a lot,” the 12-year-old revealed. “I’m pretty anxious to get in the car. It’s been different because we ran 5-6 weeks in a row; now we’re getting ready to race after waiting for six weeks.”

The youngster added, “I maybe a little bit nervous but I think I’ll be okay after the first few laps of practice. I’ve been thinking about how the race is going to go and I feel it should go well. I feel we’ll have some good power this time around since we put in a new engine right before the last race (the Spreens used a new engine in the #81 South Bay/Spreen Racing Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo at San Antonio Speedway).”

Spreen Racing Team owner Greg Spreen said the team hasn’t been sitting idly by waiting for the last race. “We’ve been busy participating in racing. We’ve been working with Trey Mitchell and his ASA efforts, going to Thunder Hill’s special races (the NASCAR Grand National race on Sept. 30 and USAC Midgets race on Oct. 14).”

The elder Spreen has also worked on his son’s car. “We’ve been going over the car, checking over the car and doing preventive maintenance. We’re very happy with the new motor we installed right before the SAS race.”

Dillon admitted to thinking about the Lonestar Legacys title. “Yes, I’ve been thinking about it (winning the championship) and about doing what I need to do to make it official. I have been asked about it and I just tell people I haven’t won it yet, but I’ll be ecstatic when it becomes official. It’s something that will be a big deal considering my age.”

For the record: the Boerne Middle School Outstanding Student Award is given to students “displaying outstanding consistently, displaying intergrity, ownership (responsibility) and flexibility on the eight keys to excellence.” Recipients are nominated by the school’s staff.
