NickHolt
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 25, 2006 Contact: K-MAC Sports, 512.417.9414 Smith’s ‘Spectacular’ season looking for spectacular ending this Saturday La Vernia, TX (10/25/06) - Everything seems to be pretty “spectacular” for 17-year-old Cody Smith going into Saturday’s Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) season finale at Thunder Hill Raceway (THR), located at Exit 210 off IH-35 North in Kyle (TX). Smith, from La Vernia (TX), enters Saturday’s 10th Annual Texas Stock Car Spectacular holding a two-point lead in the TSRS series over 37-year-old “grizzled” veteran Tommy Gural (Elgin). The fact that Smith is holding the points lead in his rookie season in TSRS is pretty spectacular in itself. Smith has also all but clinched the series’ Rookie of the Year award. Smith, a junior at La Vernia High School, also has an advantage going into Saturday’s TSRS finale. Smith is only in his second year of racing – last year, he won the Hobby Stock class championship at (you guessed it), Thunder Hill Raceway. “I was fortunate to win one championship (at THR) and would love to win (the TSRS title) here,” Smith stated. “I don’t feel like a series rookie at this point, I just feel like a regular driver who’s driving for the first time in this series.” The youngster added, “If there’s a track to win a championship at its Thunder Hill. Winning the championship there would be huge. This was supposed to be a “learning” year for us but after we started making some ground in the standings we set our sights on winning the Rookie award, then the championship. We’re happy to be in this position and honored to be in the chase (for the title).” However, Smith Family Racing is very aware of one more “spectacular” theme for this weekend – the fact Gural is known as “Mr. Spectacular” because of his domination of Thunder Hill’s popular postseason race. “We’ve definitely got our hands full with Gural,” said team owner Tom Smith. “He always seems to have good luck at that track, especially during the Spectacular. It’s going to be a great fight and a great race for the fans.” Tom Smith added, “Tommy is a great person; he has a wonderful wife (Teresa, driver of the #25 TSRS car) and a great family and crew. The Gurals and their following are a class act. If we have to finish second to someone there’s no shame to finish second to Tommy Gural.” Cody Smith agreed with his father. “Tommy is such a good driver. He’s hard to pass when he gets in front. He’s a great veteran driver, I hope to beat him out, but if I can’t then I’ll be the first to step up and congratulate him for winning the championship. He and his crew are as deserving as we are to win this championship.” With the stage set for a “TSRS Series Shootout,” one can only imagine the spectacular race between Smith,, Gural and the other TSRS drivers will put in front of the anticipated crowd at Thunder Hill Raceway. The gates open to the public at 4 p.m. on Saturday while qualifying starts at 4:30 p.m., a half-hour later. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 7 p.m. sharp. Cody Smith and Smith Family Racing are sponsored by RTM Construction Company, LTD., Dodson Demolition, Oval Components (San Antonio), Long’s Racing Engines, Salazar Racing and Fossil Fuel Motorsports.
