ChuckLicata
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 19, 2006 Contact: K-MAC Sports, 512.417.9414 Smith Family Racing excited to be racing again La Vernia, Texas (10/19/06) – The six-week layoff between races in the Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) Late Models is “finally” over, according to the Smith Family Racing team. Cody Smith and his #16 crew are more than ready to race – and compete for the TSRS Drivers Championship and Rookie of the Year title – over the next two weeks, starting this Saturday (Oct. 21) at the 3/8th-mile, high-banked oval at Houston Motorsports Park (HMP). Smith leads racing veteran Tommy Gural (Elgin, TX) by just two points (1,301-1,299) in the current TSRS points standings. Defending champ Chris Schild (Leander, TX) is 54 points behind Smith in third place. Smith holds a 127-point edge (1,301-1,174) over Kyle Sirizzotti (Helotes, TX) for the series’ Rookie of the Year award (the 15-year-old Sirizzotti sits fifth in the overall standings). “Oh, I’ve been looking forward to racing for along time, it’s been a long six weeks,” stated Smith. “We’re taking the car to Houston on Friday in hopes of getting some practice time in. I feel good about our chances to do well in this race as well as qualifying. We got second in qualifying last time at HMP (on Aug. 19th) and I feel we have a chance to win the pole this time around.” The 17-year-old junior at La Vernia High School added, “We’ve been working on the car the whole week. Painting, tires, working on the rear end a little bit – we feel we’ve got everything ready for Houston. We’d like to stay ahead of Tommy Gural after the race is over in Houston.” Of course, the team would like to stay ahead of all TSRS competitors after the next two weekends of racing – this Saturday’s race at HMP as well as the Oct. 28 Texas Stock Car Spectacular at Thunder Hill Raceway (THR) in Kyle, TX. But team owner Tom Smith said that while Smith Family Racing hopes to chase down a championship, the team will keep its perspective, too. “Our game plan is to go out there with the intention to have fun and let chips fall where they may,” the elder Smith said. “If we get tense and tight then we won’t have a good race. We’re anxious to go out there and have fun but we’re not out to win the championship this weekend in Houston. We’re out there to have a non-pressure weekend and have some fun. We’re going to keep everything pressure-free.” Tom Smith added, “We’d like to thank the Man upstairs; it’s because of him that we’re able to accomplish what we have. Whatever happens this year for us, we’ve had an enjoyable year running with TSRS. We’ve had some great times with some wonderful people. We keep making new friends in the series each week; the series, as well as its teams and competitors, are first-class all the way.” The Smith Family Racing team is sponsored by RTM Construction Company, LTD., Dodson Demolition, Oval Components (San Antonio), Long’s Racing Engines, Salazar Racing and Fossil Fuel Motorsports. The team’s web site – www.codysmithracing.com - is currently under construction by Race Day Creations (www.racedaycreations.com) owner John Hanna. - 30 -
