Crucial ASCS Gulf South Weekend Double Looms

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (September 25, 2006) A critical weekend double looms for the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region, with just one event remaining after this weekend's pair of events in South Texas.

Friday night, the series makes its final stop of the year at Motorama Speedway in Beaumont, TX, before moving to Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, TX, for the last time in 2006 on Saturday night. Both events offer up a winner's share of $2,000.

Beaumont's Gary Watson enters the pivotal weekend with a 36-point advantage over Texas City shoe Greg Rilat in the championship points race, with defending series champion Ray Allen Kulhanek of Danbury, TX, 65 points off the lead pace in third.

Watson picked up his lone feature win of the season at Motorama Speedway on June 23, while Kulhanek scored his single feature victory of '06 the next night at Houston Raceway Park.

Lane Whittington of Denham Springs, LA, enters the weekend ranked fourth, with Larry Hartwell of Pasadena, TX, rounding out the current top five. The balance of the current top ten includes Richard Holt (McLeod, TX), Kent Lewis, Jr. (Willis, TX), Brandon Berryman (Missouri City, TX), Jason Johnson (Eunice, LA) and Ty Johnson (Eunice, LA).

In the series last three events, Tulsa's Brad Best has reached victory lane two times while Fort Worth's Kevin Ramey has cracked victory lane as well. Ramey, who sits atop the ASCS Gulf South Region's career win list, is expected for this weekend's double.
