ASCS Sooner Region Showdown Saturday at Cowtown

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (September 19, 2006) With the championship hanging in the balance, the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region makes its third and final stop of the season atop the high-banked, ¼-mile Cowtown Speedway clay oval in Kennedale, TX, this Saturday night.

And it's a mere 18 points that separate Sam Hafertepe, Jr., Sean McClelland and Kevin Ramey in the series championship points race with just one event remaining after Saturday night's card.

Hafertepe, the 20-year-old shoe from Sunnyvale, TX, will be shooting for a sweep of the year's ASCS Sooner Region events at Cowtown after topping the season opener on April 8 then backing that up with another Cowtown score on June 10.

While Hafertepe guns for a Cowtown sweep and a fourth overall Sooner Region win of 2006, McClelland and Ramey have each enjoyed Cowtown success in the past as well.

McClelland, from Collinsville, OK, posted an April 2005 victory during a championship campaign, while Ramey scored a win in May of 2004, also a during a title drive. Ramey, who resides just a few short miles from Cowtown Speedway, has racked up approximately 20 wins in weekly action at Cowtown over the past four years, including four wins this year.

While Hafertepe, searching for a first series championship, tries to hold off past ASCS Sooner Region champions McClelland and Ramey, the trio will face a stout field of competitors on Saturday night, including Forney, TX, shoe Travis Rilat, who topped the September Cowtown event last year.

Tulsa's Brian McClelland enters Saturday's card ranked fourth in ASCS Sooner Region points, with 2001 series champion J.P. Bailey rounding out the current top five. The balance of the current top ten includes Johnny Miller (Burleson, TX), 17-year-old Dex Eaton (Owasso, OK), 18-year-olds Eric Baldaccini (Keller, TX) and Justin Melton (Flower Mound, TX) and tenth-ranked Jimmy Taylor of Oklahoma City.

Broken Arrow, Oklahoma's Nick Smith carries a two-race Sooner Region win streak into Saturday's card.

Saturday's racing action at Cowtown Speedway fires off at 7:00 p.m.

Cowtown Speedway is located just east of Fort Worth, TX, off I-20 Exit 442-A, then 1.7 miles southeast on Mansfield Highway, then 1.4 miles southwest on New Hope Road. For more information, contact the track at 817-478-9952 or 817-572-0848.
