Gural Expands Point Lead But Race Still To Close To Call

By: Pat Mayberry

Current Texas Super Racing Series point leader, Tommy Gural opened some breathing room with his second victory of the season July 15th at Thunder Hill Raceway. Gural now has a fifty three (53) point lead over defending series champion Chris Schild as the two veterans prepare for the Mid Summer Shootout, which is the first road course race in two years for the series.

Gural has been the model of consistency so far this season. His forth place finish in the season opening KMAC 75 at Houston Motorsports Park has been his worst finish of the season. Gural has followed that opening day effort with a second place run in the Robert Reyes Memorial 75, a win in the Kevin Suberg Memorial 75, another second place effort on the Red, White and Blue 100 and a second victory in the Tribute To Americas Finest – Operation Interdependence 75.

At mid point in the season every race from here on will shape the final outcome this season. Gural still tops the leader board with 865 points. Schild will look to rebound from his season worst eighth place finish and now trails by (53) points in the standings. The rest of the current Texas Super Racing Series Top 5 in points has Rookie of the Year candidate, Cody Smith a scant 84 points back and coming off his best night of the season having captured his first pole and turning in a career best second place effort. In 4th place, 103 points back, is Kyle Sirizzotti who stormed back into the championship hunt two races ago with his first series win. Teresa Gural had some bad luck in the last race but still is holding on to the 5th place spot, 165 points behind her husband.

Gural and Schild have some road course experience and believe the 2.9 mile track of Texas World Speedway will pose some interesting challenges for drivers this weekend. Series drivers are looking at adding additional bracing to their hot rods as top speeds are expected to reach 150 MPH on the front straight-a-way.

It has been an exiting day here at TWS, drivers have been able to go onto the track and get familiar with the 2.9 road course. A couple of drivers were clocked on the front stretch at near 130 miles per hour.

At the 7:00 pm drivers meeting, drivers & crew members sat in to get a head start on the NASA rules, explained by NASA Race Director, Clifton Winkleman. Questions and concerns were answered and clarified, the staff of NASA have been very professional and are a pleasure to work with. Looks to be a good start to a great weekend. Hope to see you here. Take care!

Mary Ann
