WOAI-TV Breaking News from San Antonio Speedway

San Antonio, TX (July 31, 2006) - It has been reported that some fast and flashy vehicles with numbers on them were chasing each other at high rates of speed around San Antonio Speedway this past Saturday night. News 4 traffic reporter Shelly Miles was sent out to investigate. Upon her arrival, she couldn’t resist joining in on the action. Stay tuned for more details on this developing story.....

.....Ten NASCAR Late Model drivers hit the track to provide a grandstand full of viewers with some high octane racing excitement. Brian Moczygemba paced the field to the green flag, followed by Larry Bendele, Robert Barker and Todd Farris. It didn’t take long for a commercial break as rookie Donald Pogue and David Barker mixed it up entering Turn 3 on the very first lap, ending the night for both drivers. The second attempt to get the race started resulted in a yellow flag due to a jump start. The third time was the charm, and Bendele blasted into the lead. Moczygemba ducked into the pits on Lap 2 with transmission woes. Barker was right on Bendele’s heels, and on Lap 11 assumed the lead. Just past the halfway marker, Aramendia, who had started the race at the back of the pack, began to turn up the volume. He channeled a path around both Jamie Fuller and Bendele...stationing himself in the second position. As the laps wound down, Barker was anchored to the lead, and no one was going to move him. He went on to win, and crossing the stripe behind him were Aramendia, Bendele, Fuller and Donny Horelka.

If you like your racing hot, hot, hot - the NASCAR Sportsman did not disappoint. Front row contenders Jamie Evans and Tater Mason raced side-by-side for the first two laps before Mason finally secured the top spot. The 4 x 4 Doppler Radar showed Eric Knudtson and Mark Mathias to be Mason’s stiffest competition, as they moved into the second and third positions by Lap 4. The caution lights lit up when Chad Menard attempted to pass Keith Garrett for the fifth position on Lap 7. Four laps later, and without any "4"warning, Mathias suddenly exited into the pits. Knudtson continued to apply high pressure to Mason’s back bumper. Mason was able to weather Knudtson’s wrath and motored into victory circle. Finishing in positions 3 - 5 were Evans, Tommy Casey and Craig Crawley.

Is that the NBC peacock on the high-banked oval? NO...it’s the NASCAR Road Runner division. Leland Frautschi and Paul Lipp were awesome as they ran 1-2 for most of their 25-lap feature event. The red flag flew on Lap 10 when Chris Foster smacked the wall coming off Turn 2. When the race concluded, Frautschi migrated to the checkered flag in front of Lipp, Leonard Flores III, JR Eichelberger and Mona Turner. During post-race inspections, the cars of Frautschi and Flores were found to be underweight. These discrepancies didn’t fly with the officials. Both drivers were disqualified, and Lipp was declared the winner.

NASCAR Grand Stock driver Jody Wayne Stuart was really hitting on all eight cylinders as he cruised to his sixth victory of the season. Chasing him to the checkers were Steve Dalrymple, Missy Jones and Nathan Sloan.

It was a disastrous start for USRA Modified driver Bobby Teer Jr. when he was tagged from behind, leaving John Witzsche and Clare Randall with nowhere to go. When the green flag waved again, pole-sitter Ryan Engelhardt jumped into the lead with Bruce Beddoe inhaling his fumes. On Lap 10, Mark Chrudimsky relinquished his third position when he dipped into the pits. Just shy of the halfway point, Engelhardt really had his hands full...not only did Beddoe get past him, his car erupted in a cloud of smoke. Beddoe’s lead was short-lived when he and Newton Barta Jr. tangled between Turns 3 and 4. Billy Becka then inherited the No. 1 position with 16-year old rookie Trey Mitchell lined up right behind him. Mitchell was all over Becka, and then some. With seven laps remaining, Mitchell maneuvered his #47 racer around Becka, and went on to claim his very first modified win. Bob Slezinsky, John Paul Kliewer and Mel Krauss rounded out the top five finishing positions.

Twelve USRA Trucks were revved up for their 50-lap feature event. Craig Roper was going for his third straight victory at SAS...AND as the race got underway his chances of doing just that were looking very, very good. He dominated the majority of the race. However, with 15 laps remaining Steve Green was able to truck on past Roper for the lead. Three laps later, Roper was forced to pit with a flat tire. When the checkered flag flew, it was Steve Green enjoying the accolades of victory lane. Jason Marshall finished in the runner-up spot followed by Jody Buzbee, John Kelly Jr., and Matthew Howell.

<nod> KISS. The night overall was packed with action. I do hope the News 4 cameras got some of the action. Man, the truck race was competetive as all get out! The top few kinda pulled away but the rest of us were racin' our guts out. If someone fell off the pace we freight-trained 'em to the back LOL. Like sharks waiting for the chum :)

yea, there seemed to be a lot of contact during the race but as far as I could tell it was hard-racing <shrug>. Roper inadvertantly side-swiped me going into 3 but I think he was just trying to get to the apron to pit for the tire that was going down. It seemed once you got hung out, you had to wait for just about everyone else to go by 'cause most of us were right there :)

Sorry to hear about the axle, I was wondering what had happened to you and Kevin.
