A full moon hung over the facility voted “The Best in Family Fun Entertainment” by the readers of the Killeen Daily Herald, Texas Thunder Speedway defiantly lived up to the billing as over 900 people voted with their wallets and came to see over 100 cars put on another great show for Dodge Country!

The nights feature races started out with three of the youngest racers taking to the track to contest the eight lap Kwik Kar Oil & Lube Jr Mini Stock race. These cars are piloted by kids that are at least thirteen, but not yet sixteen years old.

On the drop of the green flag, outside pole sitter Ryan Ellis got the jump going into turn one. Joseph Charnock slotted into second, with Colten Monroe rounding out the field. In turn three, Charnock got around Ellis to take over the lead. Monroe would climb to second in turn four, pushing Ellis to third.

At the halfway mark, Monroe had reeled in Charnock in turn four and the two youngsters went door handle to door handle all the way to turn two, with Charnock holding off last weeks winner Monroe. The those two raced hard for the final four laps, but Monroe could not get around the smooth driving Charnock. It would be the third win of the year for Charnock. The battle for the championship should be a good one, as there is only five points separating these speedy drivers.

Nineteen Kwik Kar Oil & Lube Street Stocks were the next class to take to the fast quarter mile track. One the drop of the green the fight for the lead would go three wide down the front stretch and a mighty scramble commenced for the lead. It was Ryan Anderson taking the lead as they raced on the back stretch over Robert Simmerman, Danny Dunn, Jessie James Cox Jr, and Dean Silva. In turn for the the initial lap, Simmerman would go side by side with Anderson. Simmerman got the lead in turn one, pushing Anderson to second. Anderson would then have trouble in turn three, doing a half spin and letting Dunn around for second.

The race would be slowed with a yellow flag on lap four when Silva spun his ride on the back straight and coming to a stop. There was fierce racing all around the track, and this reporter simply wasn't able to keep up with all the action. So, the restart top ten were Simmerman, Dunn, Anderson, Trevor Sparkman, “Dashing” Dave Meadows, Carl Boettcher, Albert Wininger Jr, Gene Burnett, Mike McLaughlin, and Tim Fasano.

On the restart, Sparkman would jump around Anderson in turn two to take over third. Anderson's slide backwards wasn't over as Meadows would get around him in turn three. Then Meadows would keep the run going and got third from Sparkman in turn four. On the next lap Meadows would dispatch Dunn in turn two, hauling himself up to second.

The leader, Simmerman, was already catching lapped traffic on lap six, putting Lisa Parent a lap behind. On lap seven, McLaughlin and Boettcher hooked bumpers coming out of turn four and tangleing on the front stretch. No yellow was thrown, and both drivers lost a tremendous amount of track position, with both eventually going down a lap. On lap nine a caution was thrown for debris laying on the track in turn two. The field was so mixed up with lapped traffic, that the only spots this reporter was sure of was the top six. They were Simmerman, Meadows, Wininger Jr, Sparkman, Dunn, and Tim Worthy.

On the restart another yellow would be thrown, as Burnett lost his left rear wheel in turn two. The restart order for the top six remained the same. On the restart Wininger Jr and Meadows were side by side in turn one and two in a battle for second. Meadows would hold off the current points leader. Meanwhile, Dunn used turn three to get around Sparkman for fourth. The field continued to race hard the remaining laps, but no other positions changed among the top six. Simmerman would record his fourth win of the season by one car length over Meadows.

A full points night was in store for the winner of the ten car Hertz Rent A Car I. M. C. A. Southern SportMods fifteen lap feature race. On the green flag, it was Billy White leading Chuck Schoenfeld, Shad Stevens. Pat McGuire and Kenny Ware were wheel to wheel for fifth, with K. Ware getting the spot in turn three. The next lap wasn't kind to second place Schoenfeld, as the former pavement driver got loose in turn turn and lost five places. On lap four it was the leader White's turn to bobble in turn two, and Stevens took over the top spot bringing McGuire with him and pushing White back to third.

On lap five McGuire would get under Stevens in turn four and the two raced wheel to wheel for the lead. The spot wouldn't be decided, as a yellow was thrown for pole sitter Corey Homan's spun car on the back stretch. The officials deemed the cause of Homan's spin to be Michael Walter. Walter was black flagged for rough driving. While the field circulated under yellow, the leader Stevens pulled his car into the pits and out of the race. Points leader Trace Crawford pulled his car to the hot pits, but would return to the race before the green waved again.

So with the shuffle up front, the restart order was McGuire, White, K. Ware, Olin Dillard, Schoenfeld, Homan, and Crawford. On the restart the action was in the back of the pack as Dillard spun in turn one. Homan collected Dillard's spun car and the yellow would be displayed again. Dilliard was taken to the pits on the hook with a missing right rear wheel. The lineup remained the same, minus Dillard.

On the restart K. Ware and Schoenfeld banged wheels in turn two, with Schoenfeld coming out the worse in the exchange. He would drop to sixth and last place. On lap eight Schoenfeld would get back into the top ten, as he got around Crawford. Crawford was nursing a wounded car and was trying to get as many points as possible. The field strung out as the laps wound down. On the white flag lap, Homan would go to high in turn two and lost fourth to Schoenfeld. McGuire would cruise to a ten car length win over White, picking up his first ever win in the class.

As an added bonus feature on this night, the Texas Dwarf Car Association showed up with ten of the 5/8 scale, motorcycle engine powered race cars. They were on hand for the Ron Landrum Memorial race. After the four wide salute to the fans on the warm up laps, the racing got started. It would be Michael Hammond getting the early lead over Arden Vikre, Eric Schmitt, Ricky Winks, and James Parks. On lap one, Vikre would get around Hammond in turn four to be the leader. On lap two, Schmitt would get around Hammond in turn two to take over second. On lap three, Schmitt would spin in turn four, bringing out the first caution flag of the race.

The restart top five were Vikre, Winks, Hammond, Chandler, Parks. On the restart, The mystery driver in the #13 got a great start, getting around Parks and then went side by side with Hammond in turn two. They banged doors with #13 getting the spot. But the contact slowed both car up, and Bill Bailey would swoop around both on the back straight to get to fourth. On lap six, the fight for fifth was hot and heavy, not to mention three wide. Parks would get the fifth position in turn four.

As they came to the crossed flag signaling half way, #13 would get around Parks in turn one. But it would be short lived as #13 spun in turn two but was able to keep going saving a caution, though at the back of the pack. On lap twelve, it would be Hammond spinning in turn two, giving up three positions. On lap four, Schmitt would spin in turn four, again he got going before a caution was needed.

A lap later, Winks and Vikre would go toe to toe in a battle for the lead. Winks would get the top spot from Vikre. Further back in the pack, Parks was getting around Bailey for fifth. Winks would go on the win by five car lengths over Vikre.

Fifteen Dodge Country I. M. C. A. Modifieds showed for their twenty lap feature race. On the drop of the green it was pole sitter Paul Mullins out ahead of Ken Old, Andrew Simmerman, Pat McGuire, and Allen Waltimire. On lap one, three time winner, McGuire got around Simmerman to get third. Then on lap three, in turn one McGuire would loop his mod loosing thirteen spots, but no yellow was needed.

On lap five, Gribble would get under Ken Old in turn one to take over second, then Gribble would use turn two to get into the lead, passing Mullins. Mullins bobbled in the second turn and would end up fourth by the end of the lap. A lap later and the field would go four wide on the back stretch in a titanic battle for fourth. The battle was not able to be settled, as J D Schleis spun his car to a stop in turn two, bringing out the caution flag.

The restart had the top ten as Gribble, Old, Simmerman, Mullins, Waltimire, Kenny Stone, PJ Egbert, Glen Derks, Wesley Hamilton, and George Lamphere. On the restart, Stone would go wheel to wheel with Waltimire in turn one and two in a bid for fifth, but Waltimire held his position. On lap seven, Egbert would get around both Stone and Waltimire, as he split those two on the back stretch and pulling himself up to fourth. On lap eight Stone finally got around Waltimire for fifth.

Egbert continued his march from thirteenth as he battled Simmerman on lap eight for third. They ran side by side from turn two on lap eight all the way to turn one on lap ten before Egbert finally got the spot. Caution came out for debris in turn four. The top ten, in order were Gribble, Old, Egbert, Simmerman, Stone, Waltimire, McGuire, making a charge back up through the field, Mullins, Chuck Bayles and Bill Lacompte.

On the restart Egbert took over second from Old. McGuire got a good jump and picked up four spots, getting around Stone and Waltimire in turn four, and then getting around Simmerman and Old to get back to third. On lap eleven, Egbert's march to the front was completed as he took the lap from Gribble. A lap later and the race was slowed by Bayles who rolled to a stop on the outside of turn two.

The reshuffled top ten were, Egbert, Gribble, McGuire, Old, Simmerman, Stone Waltimire, Lecompte, Mullins and Schleis. On the single file restart, Stone would get around Simmerman on the front straight to get fifth. The Stone went side by side with Old in turn two in a bid for fourth but Old would hold him off. Stone's time in fifth was short lived, as Simmerman around Stone and Old on the thirteenth lap, getting unto fourth. Stone also got around Old, pushing him back to sixth.

Stone and Simmerman continued their little race in a race as they changed positions again on lap fourteen. With just two laps to go, Schlleis touched Mullins in turn three and spun himself out and stopped bringing out the yellow flag. The top nine for the green, white, and checkered finish were Egbert, Gribble, McGuire, Stone, Simmerman, Old, Waltimire, Lecompte and Mullins. As the race got back under way no positions changed hands until the white flag lap, when Waltimire spun in turn two and out of seventh. Egbert finished his great run by winning over Gribble by two car lengths. The points leader pad his lead with his fourth win of the year.

The Cottman Transmissions Mini Stocks were next up for fifteen laps. The front row was a family affair as dad, Orie Shipler was on the pole with son, Daniel Shipler in his truck to his outside. O. Shipler would get the jump over his son and Rickey Reed. David Stewart and Travis Zwiefelhofer were door handle to door handle for fourth. Stewart would get the position, plus another as Reed spun in turn four. Julie Zwiefelhofer would be in fifth at the end of lap.

On lap two, D. Shipler's truck started to show smoke out of the engine compartment. D. Shipler would take the truck to the pits. In turn two, T. Zwiefelhofer got around Stewart. Ronnie Ellis Jr was on a heck of run, as he got around Stewart and both of the Zwiefelhofer kids on the back straight to get into second. Stewart would loose the handle on his car and spin on the back stretch on lap three. He would get it back underway before a caution was needed.

On lap four, Ellis would do a half spin in turn two, letting T. Zwiefelhofer back around for second. PJ Egbert was on a good run, picking off cars right and left. He would get around J. Zwiefelhofer for fourth in turn four on lap five. On lap seven, Ellis Jr looked under T. Zwiefelhofer coming off of turn four but couldn't get the pass done. T. Zwiefelhofer would make it easy for Ellis Jr as he looped his ride in turn two. No caution was needed, but T. Zwiefelhofer would end up loosing seven positions.

On lap eleven, Egbert got a run out of turn two and used the high line down the back straight to get alongside Ellis Jr. They raced side by side to turn four, where Ellis Jr was able to hold Egbert off. Egbert would then try the inside line in turns one and two, but again Ellis Jr held off the challenge. Egbert would continue to challenge Ellis Jr and finally got the job done going down the back straight on lap twelve and took over second. It would be short lived however, as Ellis Jr went high around Egbert to reclaim second.

Meanwhile, even though they were fighting tooth and nail, O. Shipler was still in striking range of Ellis Jr and Egbert. As the white flag was waved, they would again be door handle to door handle, with both almost spinning in turn two, giving O. Shipler the breathing space he needed. Egbert did do a donut on the back stretch, but only lost one spot. O. Shipler was able to hold off Ellis by two car lengths to take his first victory of the season.

Nineteen Corbin & Associates, Atty's I. M. C. A. Stock Cars were up next for fifteen laps of racing. On the initial start, as the pack raced through turns one and two, we experienced a “Talladega Big One” More cars had at least a piece of the wreck than missed it. It was started as Zana Craig spun in front of most of the field. At the end of the schnozle, eleven cars were involved in it. They were Craig, Jessie James Cox Jr, Shad Stevens, Jacob Dunn, Buck Owens, Bradley Sims, Gary Norman, Cham Savage, Jon Nelson, Tracy Kitchens, and Tommy Honey. Dunn and Norman were the only ones that could not continue.

Better luck was had on the second try at a start for most of the field. Craig spun again in turn four, collecting Honey who had to go to the infield to dodge. No yellow was needed and both continued. The top five were Anthony Otken, Benji Kirkpatrick, Ron Simpson, Eric Jones and Tony Hamil. On lap two, Savage would get around Hamil for fifth. A lap later and Kirkpatrick got the lead from Otken for the lead. On lap five, Simpson would push Otken back to third. Otken would slide back to fourth on lap six, as Jones got around him for third.

Lap nine would see Nelson spin, out of sixth place, and continue in turn four. On lap eleven Jones would get inside Simpson in turn four in a bid for second place. They raced hard side by side till turn one with Simpson keeping second. On lap twelve Kirkpatrick was encountered heavy lapped traffic on the back straight. The leaders would be racing the rest of the race in that traffic. On the last lap Jones would once again try to get Simpson's spot, using the outside going down the back stretch, but couldn't get it. Kirkpatrick started ninth and cruised to a five car length win. It was his third time parking in victory lane.

The Budweiser Racing Texas Twisters fifteen lap feature ended the night. Fifteen of the cars that race, not race cars, took to the track. As the green flag waved it was FIVE wide down the front stretch going into turn one! As they got themselves straightened out on the back straight it was Jared Bouchie leading Howard Twardokus, James Deane, Jessie Call and Brian Mendenhall. On lap one, Mike Sadler was flying, getting into fourth. Nasty Nate Cullifer was in fifth.

On lap two, Cullifer was high wide and handsome in a three wide battle for third. But Deane and Sadler held him off. On the next lap those three would again go three wide again, this time for the second spot as Bouchie's night would come to an early end and he pulled off the track. Cullifer would get the spot, with Sadler getting around Deane as well. Behind the fight for the lead it was wide and wooley as positions were changing by the second.

Yellow would wave on lap four for debris in turn one. The top ten were Twardokus, Cullifer, Sadler, Deane, Chris Florio, Sean Carr, Mendenhall, Clint Williams, Jessie Call and Gary White. On the restart Carr and Florio went side by side from the front straight all the way to turn four, where Carr finally got fifth. On lap five Cullifer go high in turn three and pull off to the red-yellow area out of second. On lap six another yellow was thrown for debris in turn three.

The restart order was Twardokus, Sadler, Deane, Carr, Mendenhall, Williams, White, J.D. Hardcastle, Keith Desmarais, and Jessi Call. Carr would get around Deane in turn one on the restart. Carr would then challenge Twardokus high in turn three, but the low line was better for Twardokus and he held the lead. On the next lap, Carr would again try going high around Twardokus. This time the raced door handle to door handle down the front stretch, with the same outcome.

Lap eight yellow would again be shown to the field as Williams was stranded in turn four when his right front tire departed the racing surface. Attrition was the name of the game, as the restart saw nine of the original fifteen still left on the track. They were in order, Twardokus, Sadler, Carr, Mendenhall, Deane, Call, White, Desmarais, and Cullifer. On the restart Twardockus and Sadler were bumping and rubbing in turn one, with Sadler getting out of shape. Mendenhall got around Carr and pounced on Sadler pushing him back to third.

On lap nine, that race for second heated up three wide style on the back stretch. Mendenhall was on the bottom, Sadler was high, and Call was the meat in the middle. Sadler came out of turn three back in second, followed in order by Call and Mendenhall. On lap twelve

Car would try to get around Mendenhall for fourth on the front stretch, but Mendenhall held him off in turn two. Carr would try the same move on the next lap, this time getting the spot. Sadler would hound Twardokus for the final couple of circuits, but Twardokus would take his brand new car to victory lane in his very first race.
