Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (May 22, 2006) It's a South Texas Memorial Day weekend double for the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region with events in Willis and Highlands on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday night, the series makes its first stop of the season at the high-banked, ¼-mile Gator Motorplex clay oval in Willis, TX.

Then on Sunday night, the Gulf South Region moves on to the 5/16-mile Battleground Speedway in Highlands, TX, for the Memorial Classic, with a $2,000 winner's share hanging in the balance in the Gulf South debut at Battleground.

National Tour aces Jason Johnson and Travis Rilat have dominated ASCS Gulf South victory lane thus far in 2006, with the pair accounting for all five feature wins. However, with the ASCS National Tour in Virginia this weekend, the door will be opened for a new winner or two over the weekend.

While Johnson holds the series point lead, it's Texas City, TX, shoe Greg Rilat who enters the weekend ahead of the series' full-time competitors. Rilat is just 22 points ahead of Beaumont's Gary Watson, with other top Gulf South shoes expected over the weekend including Chris Sweeney, Lane Whittington, 15-year-old Channin Tankersley, defending series champion Ray Allen Kulhanek, Larry Hartwell and Stephen Chevallier.

While Sunday's card marks the series first Battleground invasion, the Gulf South Region made a pair of stop at Gator Motorplex in 2005 with Scottie McDonald and Travis Rilat each scoring wins.

Saturday's action at Gator Motorplex is set to go green at 7:00 p.m., with Sunday's Memorial Classic at Battleground Speedway getting under way at 7:30 p.m.

Gator Motorplex is located in Willis, TX, off I-45 Exit 98 (Shepherd Hill), then east, then 1.4 miles south on State Road 75. For more information, contact the track at 936-588-6127.

Battleground Speedway is east of Houston on I-10 to Exit 787, then four miles north. For more information, contact the track at 713-946-7223.

The 2006 ASCS Gulf South Region schedule consists of 25 events at ten different tracks throughout Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas.

In its 15th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing in the United States, the American Sprint Car Series will present approximately 180 nights of racing at nearly 100 tracks throughout 27 different states and Canada in 2006 including the National Tour and its Regional Tours (Gulf South, Mid-South, Midwest, Northern Plains, Patriot Sprint Group, Rocky Mountain, Sooner, Southern and Sprints on Dirt).
