Dirt Track Honors Women with Ladies Night Racing Program. By Bill Morris

With Sunday being Mothers Day, it was appropriate that Saturday night at South Texas Dirt Track featured the women drivers. The lady drivers were given starting positions at the front of all the racing events, and the ladies who watched from the grand stands were presented carnations upon their arrival at the track. Both drivers and fans enjoyed the added touch to the evening’s racing program.

Adding to the spirit of fun at the track, officials announced that next Saturday, May 20th, will be a bonus night for three of the regular divisions. The winner of the Bomber feature will take home $350 for the win. The Modified feature winners will also see an increase in their winnings, with $500 going to the Sports Mod winner and $750 to the winner of the IMCA Sunoco Feature event. An increase in the winner’s share of the prize money always brings extra competitors to the starting line.

Also added to next Saturday’s Race Program will be Go-Kart Racing.

If you own any type of Go-Kart there will be an event for you. Bring your Helmet and your Kart and be ready for the green flag.

In an evening of close finishes, the Bomber Division again entertained the fans with races that were decided by less than a car length at the end. Off the final turn Gary Blanchard, of Freeport, held off the challenge of Louise’s Monty Chamberlain. Rounding out the top three was Angletons’s Bobbie Coe.

In other Stock car action, Scott Turner, of Sheridan, took the Checkered Flag for the Super Stocks ahead of Adam Perks, of El Campo. Perks spun on lap 12 and was unable to regain the lead before the checkered flag. A much improved Eric Floyd, of Edna, finished in third. Victoria’s Kevin Migura continued his winning ways in the Late Model division, coming from the back to the front to take top honors. Following Migura to the finish line was Rory Johnson, also of Victoria and Inez’s Buck McFarlin

The Street Stock action was heated as the three top runners kept fans on the edge of the seat. Rosharon racer Donny Gay took the top spot with Edna’ drivers JJ Jennings and Kevin Parker close behind. In the Hot Stock Truck competition point leader Bob Ort, of Victoria, was side-lined for the feature by engine problems that produced clouds of black smoke. This left the door open for a new Truck winner and Jimmy Rogers, of Victoria stepped through into victory lane. He was joined by Kirk Loos in second and 2005 Track Champion Darryl Davis, both of Victoria. Top honors in the Mini-Stock Division Alvin’s Kassey Champion who finished ahead of Victoria’s Mick Moore.

Eighteen of the popular Dwarf Cars took the “green” for the 20 lap feature event. The close competition was won by San Antonio driver Dave Tedford. The second driver to take the checkered flag was Markham’s Steve Gilbert followed by Gary Hansen of West Colombia.

Rounding out the racing action were the Modified feature events. In the Sports Mods it was Inez’s Michael Harp making his first trip to the winner’s circle. Joining him was second place finishers Cody Hildebrandt of Clute and Crystal Cantu of Inez. In the IMCA Modified feature Richmond’s Art Rodrigeuz was the winner, finishing ahead of Corpus Christi veteran Bill Pittaway and Roly Rodriguez.

Dirt Track racing will return to Texana Raceway Park next Saturday, May 20th starting at 7:30pm. The track is located 3 miles southeast of Highway #59 on Highway #111 out of Edna, Texas.
