James also outran the field in the 10-lap USRA ARTS Shootout to complete his perfect night. Manchaca’s Shawn Paul Lehman finished third and ninth in the season-ending twin races at the half-mile, paved oval, which was more than good enough to clinch the 2005 USRA ARTS Championship over defending champion Robert Walton of Del Valle. In the first 35-lap race, James got the early jump on the 18-truck field and never looked back, winning by about four truck lengths ahead of Steve Green of Marble Falls. Lehman, who qualified fourth but started sixth after the inversion draw, ran a solid race, avoiding trouble and carefully selecting his spots to pass thus assuring himself of the championship. Bud Carroll provided some unexpected excitement when his engine blew up in a ball of flames on the 28th lap. Carroll coasted down the back straight trailing flames and managed to guide his ride to the entrance of pit road where he spun to a stop and jumped out. The fire was quickly extinguished and Carroll was not injured, but the same could not be said for his truck. Rounding out the top six were Bill Hamilton of Red Oak, Walton and Rusty Mirth of Austin. The top six finishers were then inverted for the second Twin 35, which put Mirth on the pole, Lehman fourth and James in sixth. As the green waved, several trucks got together down the front straight causing minor damage to several of them, although all were able to rejoin the field for a restart. Walton jumped to the early lead from his outside pole position and led until James, who quickly picked his way through the front runners, made a clean pass in turns three and four to take the point on the 11th circuit. Shortly thereafter, Green and Lehman, who were dicing for position not far back from the leaders, made contact and spun to bring out the second caution of the race. Both Lehman and Green were able to continue, but the pair was sent to the rear for being involved in bringing out a caution period. Green and Lehman recovered to finish 7th and 9th, respectively, both on the lead lap. Meanwhile, James was cruising towards his second checkered flag of the evening crossing the finish line a comfortable 0.8 seconds ahead of Josh Cheek of Buffalo who had worked his way through the field from his 14th starting position. Hamilton, Walton, Craig Roper of Vernon and rookie Jody Buzbee of Waco, who was competing in his first USRA ARTS event, rounded out the top six. To complete his sweep, James easily outdistanced Buzbee, Cheek, Hamilton, Walton, Lehman, Mirth and Green to take the 10-lap ‘Fall Brawl’ Shootout by almost five seconds. ‘Fall Brawl’ at San Antonio Speedway Results, Saturday, 11/19/05 United States Racing Association All Star Race Truck Series – First Twin 35 1.
