Houston, TX (September 5, 2019) – When Pearland native and “Texas Legend” Greg Davidson took to the ⅜ mile asphalt Oval at Houston Motorsports Park (HMP) last Saturday afternoon, it was with great anticipation. After a four year struggle resulting in the unexpected loss of his left leg from an infection, 40+ year racing veteran Greg had decided retirement wasn’t for him, and challenged himself and the Davidson crew of family and friends to make a racing comeback. In March, Team Davidson and the #96 car returned to the HMP track for the first time since Greg’s recovery, receiving a warm welcome by the fans and his fellow racers he’d missed so much. The track pits were a-buzz with the excitement of Greg’s return, with tons of greetings, hugs and well wishes. By June, things were starting to turn around. Greg was proving he could still be competitive, despite his physical challenges. Coming in fourth and sixth in the Outlaw class features was a huge achievement and just the confidence boost he needed. The August trip to the Oval was going to be different. Interviewing Greg after the June race, Rodney Rodriguez, track announcer and radio host of the Revved Up Sports Show, had predicted big things for Greg. They had imagined getting a win in Houston…and Greg promised he would work until that happened, and then he would “win some more. Can’t stop with just one!” He was comfortable in the car, but needed to get at ease between the brake and throttle. Greg says, “Sometimes in racing you use both of your feet, one on the gas and one on the brake...so we needed to find a solution for that.” Without losing a step, Greg and his son, Chris Davidson, a talented racer himself, modified the car with a hand brake. The two took the car out to HMP for practice as much as possible and with Chris’ help Greg began to find his rhythm. The Advance Auto Parts Labor Day Classic fans were treated to the true reason why this man is called ”The Texas Legend”. His racing team and family were on point, ready to see this through to the win. Then it happened. In the first practice, and within 13 laps, Greg qualified fastest. He started on the pole position, then led the race from start to finish. Rodriquez called the race, and even went live on Facebook to share the moment with fans across the web. When Greg pulled into Victory Lane, and climbed out of the car, he knew he was back. Then Rodriguez shared Greg’s comeback story with the fans, and they went wild. Greg earned a long, heartfelt standing ovation from the crowd, and brought tears to many who watched this racing tale unfold. Gina Schild Knowles, General Manager for the Texas Short Track Racing Series (TSTRS), went straight to work to capture the excitement. Greg and his family joined her at the flag stand for a personal interview with Rodriguez. Fans learned about the determination and heart of this team and knew they had witnessed something special. Rodriquez asked, “In Greg Davidson’s chronology of important wins, where does this rank?” Greg says, “It’s probably one of the best ones.
