  1. I was thinking about this ,this morning, and you are correct..For some reason I still remember the 68 and 65 chevelle in charlies garage around 72 or 73...did charlie and bob stiegal build Jerrys first lms in charlies garage? The first car I remember Duggie building was the nova that was wiped out in it's first heat race(driven by Larry) after the big splits....Larry & AJ .....Jerry & Rush/ Dottie
  2. The race you guys speak of was before 1972...72 was the first year that larry drove the 50 for AJ...it was the first Banjo Matthews car at Meyer... In 73 Tony Fasulo bought one for Phil Cronin and Jack Hawes bought one for Joe Plowman...Late in 73 Cronin left Fasulo to drive for Scotty Scott [Clothes Closet Racing]...Tony B. sold the old #8 to Bob Foster and got a new nova from Tom Pistone which got destroyed after only 3 laps when one of the Burke boys pulled across the track during hot laps... Heck of a wreck..I watched the whole thing...Tony had a new Pistone camaro the next weekend...In 1972 Schild won the first 8 or 9 races and then Freddy Fryar showed up and kicked butt... on the cool down lap Bill Bailey played the song ( well I never felt more like singing the blues, cause I never thought I ever lose) and the crowd went wild....Jerry Schild filled the seat of the old #7,owned by Charlie Schild, which was later sold to Rush Johnson...Mike Cronin drove for Fasulo for a few races and then was replaced permanently by Freddy Fryar..I know my facts are right and I think my dates are right ...I am getting old...What other facts would you like to know.........DB
  3. the last 1 car charlie had was sponsored by franks ice house and had a big block chevy.M J drove it the last half of the season and won several of the races with it...I don't remember the year but will ask Charlie next week when I see him at the races....
  4. helicopter rides? They actually had helicopters in that day and time????? I do remember going in a plane ride after winning an austrailian pursuit race at galveston. The track was still there a little over a year ago.My mom (Dodie Burton) was returning from a cruise and I picked her up and we went to old track, and drove around it. An old friend had called me that week to tell me that they would be tearing up the property to build a water park the next week, if I wanted one last look to swing by. Those were the good ol' days. My dad (Don) worked with your dad at the cadillac dealership in the 60's. I think your dad actually rode my go-cart at the dealership and crashed it into a pole.Or at least thats the story I was told......Helicopters???????Just kidding...Denny Burton....#5
  5. Chipmunk....maybe what is written on back of picture...but 110% sure that is not meyer speedway....Larry ,Lippy aka David Watkins...legend in his own mind....Grandpa was Jack Watkins #22 winged modified...red and white ....Always fast(jack).....I think I remember Jack being a roofer. Lippy later changed his # to 38 when he ran sprints and midgets at Big H.
  6. You are right on the names. I remember Beau's dad Roy now. John Goff was crew chief for JC. I think the track was closer to 5/8's than 1/2. Your brothers speedo in the #5 used to read 150 mph there, so he said.
  7. Someone should get a hold of Lippy. He should have some good pictures of the cars from the old houston modified racing assoc. days. His dad or grandpa used to run the old upright cars and was darn good. I was there te first time Lippy drove. Grandpa had to Qualify car to get in show and lippy drove. Refuse to comment about his performance that night, but he did get somewhat better with time.....Lots of time....
  8. OK guys. Your really making me go through some cobwebs to remember this stuff... #55 is a dirt car that a guy named Quinton drove at Big H for Bill Brasher when it first opened up. car is parked against the back fence of the race track.....Now then I really had to think about the pictures of pancho's car...90% sure those pictures were taken at the old Baton Rouge track. Never watched supers run there ,but went to lots of late model races there. Was asked to drive a super there for JC Smith back in 70's but my dad wouldn't let me.Alan Porter started driving the car 2 weeks later at Meyer....#4 car.......I believe that JC is Beau Smith's dad. Beau ran sprint cars at Big H and Battleground. Larry he was your inlaw for a short period.
  9. I remember racing 1/4 midgets in Houston and around Texas in my younger days, but have lost track of alot of the competitors over the years. A little help with this list and where they might be or what they've been up to would be interesting. Here's who's names I can remember.....Larry Schilds, Larry Robinson, Johnny Robertson, Randy Coon,(Shannon now), Bubba Nolan, Gail Nolan, Sandra Honea, Jo Jo Jordan, BoBo Cooper, Bill Pollack, Kathy Pollack, Larry Pollack, Dempy Rozofy......and somebody help me out here. Oh yeah me ...Denny Burton.
