Final Points Night/DTK Memorial Weekend @ I-37 Speedway 10/29-30/21

By JM Hallas

Pleasanton, TX.,(Oct. 30Th, 2021) Happy Halloween

All good things must come to an end and so the 2021 I-37 Speedway racing caps off its season with the DTK Memorial honoring the fathers of men who have influenced the tracks promoters and a past promoter.

With the big car points season now over, and champions crowned(Ryan Doyon-IMCA Modified, Sterling Tausch-Limited Modified, Brandon Brzozowski-Late Model, Dakota Hurley-Factory Stock and Ryan McDonald-Sport Compacts, it was time for money racing.

Two grand was up for grabs in the Factory Stocks, with a grand available for the IMCA Modifieds and Limited Modifieds and $325 for the Sport Compacts.

The Go-Karts would also finalize their points season tonight on the infield track. The Senior Division has Peyton Jones out front of Cody Clegg by 9 with Zoey Adkins in third. The Junior Division shows Blaine Markgraf leading by a huge margin over Beau Payton and Cecilia Johnson in a close fight for second. Cheston Markgraf heads the field in the Youth Division over Tucker Kempe by only 3, with Kaden Pacheco third coming into the nights action.

To celebrate tomorrows Halloween tradition the track held a “Trunk or Treat” type event with drivers/teams handing out candy. A costume contest for kids and adults offering some intermission entertainment and laughs, with $50 awarded for best costumes.

Cain Captures Factory Stock Cash

As the 24-car, 25-lap Factory Stock feature roared to life, Donald Cain and Kaden Honeycutt stayed door to door with Cain slightly ahead on lap 1 trailed by Dakota Hurley, Aaron Leddy and Josh Sewell. As the lead duo continued to side by side, Hurley tried to make it three wide until a debris caution slowed the action.

On the restart Hurley got second while Leddy and Cameron Starry were side by side for fourth. Honeycutt got back along side Hurley for second as Allen Torres got by Sewell for sixth. Honeycutt finally retook the spot with Torres running down Leddy for fifth. At halfway it was Cain, Honeycutt, Hurley, Starry and Torres in the top five.

As the top ten or twelve sorted out single file, there were good three wide battles further back in the pack. John Aramendia went around in turn 1 for a lap 14 caution. Green wasn't out long as Leddy slowed off turn 2 and clipped Sewell, then collected Jamie Dear, Johnny Johnson and Shannon Maurer for a lap 15 yellow.

The top three got ahead back under green while Torres spun, kept rolling and exited. With five to go the field had pretty much separated out by a few car lengths. As the white was shown, Cain(Willis) held about a three cars advantage over Honeycutt going on to take the win in the J&R Lieta Farm & Ranch, Magnum LP, Tonys Mobile Home Service, 3L Farms, 1st Class Towing, 2-5 Chassis.

Leasure Lands in Victory Lane

The start of the 20-lap Sport Compact feature was a little shaky as drivers found the track a bit slick after being reworked during intermission. Several drivers looped their rides in turn 3, with John Thomas going over the hill to bring about a complete restart. The second try wasn't much better after Justin Sitterle went around in turn 1.

The third time was a charm as last nights winner, Sean Leasure beat Ryan McDonald off turn 2 for the lead. McDonald, Jamie Garner, Dylan Kowalik and Michael Burris jr. fell in behind Leasure. Burris slipped in turn 1 giving up fifth to Brandon McCall. As Leasure was inching away, Kowalik moved along side Garner for third.

At halfway it was Leasure, McDonald, Garner, Kowalik and McCall in the top five. Just as Leasure had increased his margin over McDonald to a half straightaway, Jennifer Kidd spun and collected Kowalik for a lap 15 yellow. On the restart the top three were able to get away from the pack with Burris getting fifth from McCall.

McDonald changed his line trying the mid-high line line on Leasure. It gave him a better run off, but McDonald would lose that ground back to Leasure, entering. McCall and Burris continued to swap fifth spot. As the white waved McDonald gave Leasure one last try on top, but to no avail as Leasure(Mansield) in the Magic Cobra Motorsports, Rabid Motorsports, TBG, BC Customs, L&D Transportation, Chevy Cavalier doubled up for the weekend.

Another “W” for Whiteaker

The start of the 25-lap Limited Modified feature saw Robert Scrivner try to hang with Steven Whiteaker at the start. But it was Whiteaker getting the top spot leaving Scrivner three wide with Edward Oakes and Daniel Preston. Shane Hoefling was able to get by Preston for fourth. Just as E. Oakes got along side Scrivner, Roly Rodriguez, Nathan Oakes and Zach Courtney tangled for a lap 2 caution.

The restart got ugly real fast when someone mid-pack got sideways setting off a chain reaction, grinding, crash involving Logan Bearden, Tom Grothues, Kaden Honeycutt, Roly Rodriguez, Tanner Whitmire, Courtney Brian Rye and Tryton Temple. All drivers we alright, but many were done for the night.

After the red flag and clean up, the Scrivner and E. Oakes' fight continued as Whiteaker eased away. E. Oakes finally got the spot leaving Scrivner along side Hoefling for third as Dustin Butcher took fifth from Preston. Craig Oakes would go around on lap 9 with Ray Doyon spinning to miss him.

The restart saw Hoefling get by Scrivner for second with Whitmire and Trent Beaver battling for fourth. Jared Maupin joined that fight going three wide. Coming to halfway it was Whiteaker, pulling away, Hoefling, Scrivner, Beaver and Maupin in the top five. Maupin would be able to get past Beaver a lap later.

By lap 18 Whiteaker had built a full straightaway advantage over Hoefling who was being hounded by Scrivner. That scrap came to a head when the two made contact sending Hoefling to the turn 4 wall for a caution on lap 23. This would set up a single file, green, white, checker shootout to the finish.

As green flew again, Whiteaker was able to get away from Scrivner while Beaver and Maupin ran wheel to wheel for third. With the white flag in the air Whiteaker(Robstown) had a comfortable margin over Scrivner going on the victory in the Johnny Torres owned, Scott Ball Racing, Tator Plumbing, Sundowner Diesel Performance, Allens 24/7 Towing, F-Bomb Diesel, Mission Auto Parts, IRP Chassis.

Whiteaker With Weekend Sweep

As officials waited for Cameron Starry to switch cars, some drivers got a bit antsy coming to the flag with Robert Liese running up the back of Matt Fox ending Liese's night early. When green finally waved on the 20-lap main it was Steven Whiteaker getting the advantage over Craig Oakes, Logan Dinsmore, Robby Minten and Greg Dinsmore.

L. Dinsmore had trouble early sliding off turn 2, while his dad was getting past Oakes for second. Newly crownded track champ, Ryan Doyon was able to take fourth from Jared Maupin. Doyon continued going forward getting by Oakes for third. L. Dinsmore's problems continued when he brought out a yellow on lap 6, then pulled off.

As Whiteaker got ahead back to green, Doyon got by G. Ginsmore, but slid too high giving back spots to G. Dinsmore, Oakes and Maupin. Cody Clark looped it turn 4 after contact with an infield tire for a lap 8 caution. Coming to halfway after the restart it was Whiteaker, G. Dinsmore, Oakes, Maupin and Starry.

After a quick yellow for a Marlin Samford spin it was a single file restart that saw Oakes look low on G. Dinsmore for second while Doyon retook fourth from Maupin. Doyon then caught Oakes looking for third. That battle ended just as the white flag waved with Doyon making hard contact with the front stretch wall.

This set up a green, white, checkered finish to see if anyone could derail the Whiteaker train. On green G. Dinsmore tried to throw it in low going into turn 1, but Whiteaker had the drive off to keep him behind. From there, Whiteaker(Robstown) got away to go undefeated for the weekend in his Cottrell Racing, 1st Class Towing, D&SS Construction, 3-D Landscaping, G&M Oilfield Services, XRracer.com, WW Bodies, Supreme Vinyl Works, Best Racing Engines, IRP by 89Motorsports Chassis.

Whiteaker may have set a record winning all eight races he entered(4-heats, 4-features) to sweep the weekend in three different classes.

“It was a great weekend,” said Whiteaker. “The track was great both nights. The Sport Modifieds were my biggest competition. Johnny(Torres) has been saying his car just isn’t right and has been struggling a little. He dropped it off Tuesday and we tuned on it a couple days. We put a Best Race Engine in and some Dark Horse Shocks on it and never looked back. We changed 2 more springs on it Saturday and it was an improvement for sure! Just a fun weekend with family and friends!”
