IHRA Summit Super Series, Hot Rod Bracket Race @ Alamo City Motorplex 8/21/21

By JM Hallas

Marion, TX.,(Aug. 21St, 2021) Champions to be crowned.

It was season ending IHRA Summit Super Series final points race with double points on the line to decide drivers/teams headed to the World Finals in Memphis, October 14-16 for the Top ET, Modified ET, Sportsman and Jr Dragster classes.

Coming into the night here's how the points looked;

Top ET(Box) has Mike Pearson out front of former track champ Brent Ritter by 9, with Greg Meuth 28 back, while Jamie Longoria Jr. and Mike Atkinson round out the top five.

In Modified ET(No Box) it's Corky Weeks almost locked in with a 69 point lead over Chris Pearson. Billy Janousek, Alan Friedeck and Miguel Montoya complete the top five.

Rhett Floyd comes into action with a 19 point advantage over Jackie Hibbard in the Sportsman class while Harold Shimek, Ronald Gordner and Trenton Johnson hold down top five places.

Jr. Dragsters are tight, really tight. Ty Janousek comes in only 3 ahead of Addysan Rogers, and 5 ahead of Gracie O'Rourke. Reilly Garceau and Jordan Suckow complete the top five.

Past track champ, Don Hrometz continues to lead in Motorcycle by a good margin over James Marlett, William Keele, J. Monaco and Randy Monte.

Normally full moon racing is, well a bit different, mostly on circle tracks, but this is afterall, 2021. Between an electronics issue on timing boards, a transmission fluid spill, Jerry Longoria breaking an axle, Jay Fitzgerald breaking a steering wheel and Wes Bendele losing his brakes on a burnout(thankfully), there was a delay for a possum on the racing surface.

Top ET

The Top ET finals came down to the pairing of David Bills(Marion) squared off with Kevin Little(Harker Heights). Both left with .02x lights, but it was Bills, in his 2004 Undercover Dragster, getting win when Little, in his 82 Camaro, broke out on the big end.6122b9817d966__JRP3801(1024x683)(2).jpg.6a92aa7d807ec8caf1e53911298a7e40.jpg

David Bills(4.52) 4.532 @ 153.22 defeats Kevin Little(5.64) 5.629 @ 126.90(broke out)

Bills lost in the first round to Michael Pennington, then out ran M. Peil, Candace Ritter, Brandon Bass, Ryan McDonell and Brent Ritter. Little bettered Philip Pennington, Rodriguez, Peeps Pennington, and D. Licata with a round 4 bye.

Modified ET

The finals were supposed to be a father/son battle between the Herbolds(Seguin), Gene and Cole, in a shorty dragster versus a door car. Both of whom, coincidentally, have scored track championships in the past. Cole got a competition bye in the finals and just had to break the beams to officially take the victory and the points, after splitting the payout. The ol' “split and quit.”6122b99e3d69d__JRP3780(1024x683)(2).jpg.7f138c76ad9d9981e0d9c12ee40b8896.jpg

Cole Herbold(5.09) N/T defeats Gene Herbold(DNR)--Comp Bye

C. Herbold trailered Paul Schneider, Chris Pearson, Mike Zampese and M. Montoya. G. Herbold got past Vince Hernandez, Corky Weeks(twice) and Bryan Littlefield.

Sportsman

Jackie Hibbard(Humble) did what he had to do to take the championship making it to the finals against Wendall Uhr(Seguin), who may be the oldest guy in competition. Hibbard, in his 66 Chevy Nova, got 11/100th on the line, and needed every bit of it as Uhr, in his 2007 Cadillac, nailed his dial-in. Which figured out to be .082(82/1,000th) at the stripe.

Jackie Hibbard(7.54) 7.629 @ 75.83 defeats Wendall Uhr(10.71) 10.710 @ 68.48

Hibbard beat G. Alvin, R. Ewell jr., Shimek and had a bye in the semi's. Uhr lost round 1 to Jamie Longoria, rebought then took down Gordner, Nathan Ybarra and Curtis Garceau.

Motorcycle

It was an easy win in the Motorcyle finals for James Marlett(Austin) as Curt Whitworth(San Antonio) went red. This gave the victory to Marlett on his 2014 Kawaski ZX14 who would run it out.

Marlett bested Keele in round 1 while Whitworth got around Hromtez.

James Marlett(5.59) 5.629 @ 121.33 defeats Curt Whitworth(6.50) (N/T) red light

Jr Dragster

In another nail biter, the Jr. Dragster finals it was a rematch of two 7.90 cars pitting Reilly Garceau(Von Ormy) against Jayvn Johnson(Belton) in his 2004 KJH Chassis. Both left good, really good, with Garceau only getting a .004 advantage. Both ran their number with Garceau getting the win by only .021(21/1000th), if my math is correct.

R. Garceau took out Johnson, A. Rogers and had a round 4 bye to the finals. Johnson, lost in round 1 to R. Garceau then defeated Dawson Rogers, J. Bass and Janousek after the buy back.

Reilly Garceau(7.90) 7.906 @ 80.73 defeats Jayvn Johnson(7.90) 7.907 @ 81.60

Top ET

When the smoke settled(see what I did there) it was B. Ritter grabbing another track title from M. Pearson who fell to second with Meuth holding third and Kip Scharf moving up into a tie with Atkinson for fourth.

Modified ET

Despite a charge by Cole Herbold and M. Montoya, Corky Weeks held on for the Modified ET championship. C. Herbold and M. Montoya moved to second and third, respectfully, A. Friedeck held fourth while C. Pearson dropped to fifth.

Sportsman

With his Sportsman win, Hibbard jumped past Floyd, who pulled out early, to take home the title. Shimek and Gordner held there spots while John Villanueva, who also took the EV title, moved up to fifth.

Jr Dragsters

With both going out in the same round, Janousek held his point margin over A. Rogers to get the championship. R. Garceau jumped past O'Rourke for third bumping her to fourth with D. Rogers getting past Suckow for fifth.

Motorcyle

With his huge lead nothing much changed in the Motorcyle class standings. Hrometz, who had bike issues, was still able to take home another title trailed by Marlett, Keele, Monaco and Monte.
