rebelracewriter Posted August 11, 2019 Report Share Posted August 11, 2019 Sport Compact King of the Hill/Back to School Night @ I-37 Speedway by R&M Promotions, 8/10/19 By JM Hallas Pleasanton, TX.,(Aug., 10th, 2019) Scorching temperatures saw I-37 Speedway change the schedule a bit, most notably moving the Go-Kart features to intermission giving them a break after early heat(hot) races. Between the heat and dry conditions the track did everything possible to keep the track racy throughout the night. Tonight had the Sport Compact 'King of the Hill' to find out who was the best in the one-on-one challenge between 10 drivers. This years crop of Sport Compacts has grown with numerous racers in the running for a win on any given night. This years points race shows defending track champion Jamie Garner coming into the night only 11 ahead of Brandon McCall, with Johnny Ervin, Kasey Krauss and Kirk Ball within five points of each running for third about 30 points behind the lead duo. With many schools going back in session over the next week or two it was also 'Back to School Night.' Many drivers and teams, along with the track donated back packs(around 50) and school supplies that were handed out to the kids in attendance. Green Grabs Gold Defending track champ and current points leader, Rick Green(Liberty Hill) picked another win for season coming from eighth starting spot. After a couple rocky tries at starts, Green powered his way to the front on lap 3, held off Dillon Tindall through the early stages, then pulled away the final half to secure the victory. On the initial start Chris Carroll split James Samford and Justin Delgado coming off turn 2, but contact with J. Samford in turn 4 sent him around ending his night early. On the restart Landon Bednarz tried to go around J. Samford, got clipped and spun in front of Zac Riley who had nowhere to go. The third time was a charm as Green and Tindall got by Marlin Samford on the restart with Green edging out Tindall for the lead. Anthony Gordon, in Chris Swenson's car, Jamie Campbell and Jason Borlace followed the lead two past M. Samford. Tindall was first to go up top and give Green some heat showing him the nose. Tindall got along side Green on lap 8, but Green was able to fend him off. Tindall would slip giving up spots briefly to Campbell and Gordon as they came to the crossed flags it was Green, Tindall retaking second, Gordon, Campbell and Borlace. By now everyone had moved to the high groove. As Green began to distance himself, Tindall, Gordon and Campbell were running nose to tail for second. As the white waved on Green, he had over a half straightaway lead cruising to the checkers in the Green Construction, Nate Mare Wraps, Chris Carroll Construction, crate powered, 2018 BMS Chassis. “It's a long way when you have to start back in the fourth row,” exclaimed Green. “It worked out pretty good. Once Dillon(Tindall) showed me the line the second time, I knew there must be something up there. That's when I went up to the high side and the car was excellent.” “I was kind of a sitting duck running out front. Once someone shows you the nose you think if you should be there too. I was still beating him on the bottom, but once I moved up top the car was so much faster. That's when I was able to get away from him.” “They threw us a curve ball adding a little water before our feature. That's why I stayed on the bottom as long as I did. There were a couple cars that spun while running the moisture in. I gassed it up a couple times and the car would turn sideways. Gordon fought his way to the lead getting by Robby Minten just past halfway then easing away in his Alamo Hot Rod Parts, All in Designs, Dewalt Tools, 8T1 Construction, IRP Chassis. As green waved on the 20-lap feature it was polesitter, Allen Torres, first into turn 1 with Gordon, R. Minten, Rowdy Flanagan and Ryan Doyon in tow. Gordon and R. Minten then battled wheel to wheel for second with R. Minten finally securing the spot on lap 3. R. Minten continued his way to the front using the top to get by A. Torres for the lead on lap 5. Gordon was next to put A. Torres back a spot getting second as almost everyone moved to the top side. Gordon closed on R. Minten at halfway with A. Torres. Flanagan and Talon Minten rounding out the top five. Gordon caught R. Minten and showed him the nose a couple times in turn 1 and coming off turn 4. Gordon tried a slide job on lap 12, but didn't clear R. Minten. Getting a good enough run through the middle, Gordon was able stay along side on the back stretch and beat him into turn 3 to take over the top spot on lap 13. T. Minten was able to do a slider on Flanagan to move to fourth with Trent Beaver following to fifth. A. Torres had his top three finish end when he had problems and pulled off. Up front Gordon was increasing his advantage on R. Minten taking the checkers by three quarters of a straightaway. Jones fell in line second ahead of Tony Bernal, Mike Lyon and Sterling Tausch. Just as the lead duo began to gap the pack, Aaron Leddy had his first of two spins bringing out a caution. Once back to green Lyon got by Bernal for third while Darin Blevins snagged fifth from Tausch. Blevins was able to pick off Bernal and Lyon for third, but the leaders had checked out. At the midway point Gordon had eased away from Jones who had a big gap to Blevins, Lyon and Bernal. It took three tries after two starts saw multi-car melees in turn 3 bring the action to a halt. Finally the 20-lapper got off with Heil coming off turn 2 in the lead. Mikulencak, using the top, kept the pressure on getting along side Heil and by for the lead on lap 3. Behind them Dustin Hurley, Tryton Temple and Michael Keylich slugged it out for third. Du, Hurley then set his sights on Heil for second and the lead quintet eased away. Du. Hurley finally got the spot from Heil with Dillon Gaither taking fifth from Keylich. The crossed flags showed Mikulencak, Du. Hurley, Heil, Temple and Gaither in the top five. As the final half of the race clicked off, Robert Kelm did a 360 and kept going while battling with Jennie Barber and William Saunders. Kelm stalked Barber the next lap and tried to let her know he wasn't happy, but spun himself in the process and pulled off. In the meantime, Temple was able to go by Heil for third but he and Du. At the start Schoenbaum was first into turn 1 trailed by Roy Easler jr., George Compton, Brandon McCall and Michael Burris jr. Easler would slip up in turn 1 giving up spots to Compton, McCall and Burris. Burris and Compton made contact battling for second with both half spinning. Compton got away clean but Burris collected Colton Borlace and Easler. Back to green McCall was able to get around Compton for second with Jamie Garner moving into the top four. Garner and Easler then began to swap the spot for several laps. At halfway it was Schoenbaum with decent margin on McCall, Compton, Easler and Garner.
