Gustins Misfortune Turns into Powers Victory in NCRA Modified Opener!

Park City, Kansas - April 20, 2019 - The old saying "It isn't over until it's over" was never more true than it was on Saturday night as former three-time series champion took advantage of leader Ryan Gustins' misfortune on the final lap two win the season opener for the National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Mel Hambelton Ford Racing modified season kicked off their 22nd consecutive season on Saturday night at 81 Speedway in Park City.

Clint McSpadden and Joe Cleveland started on the front row for the thirty-lap-feature and at the start, the caution quickly fell when Scott Green spun at the bottom of turn two and collected several  ars.

The complete restart saw McSpadden jumping out into the lead with Cleveland jumping into the early lead. Cleveland, third-starting Powers, Brian Franz and Bryce Schiepp were your early top five.

Ninth-starting Gustin quickly moved into the third position by lap three while McSpadden had built a twelve lenght advantage by lap four. Gustin would grab the runner-up position on the same lap and set his sights on the leader.

Gustin close to within a bumper of McSpadden yet couldn't over take the position after several attempts. On lap seven, Gustin drove hard entering turn one and drove around McSpadden exiting turn two and would take the lead.

Gustin then set sail from the rest of the field and by the races midway point, had opened a full straight away advantage over McSpadden as he approached slower cars.

Consecutive cautions for spins on laps sixteen and seventeen slowed the pace of the feature and once resumed, Gustin picked up where he left off and in dominating fashion.

With ten laps to go the top five were Gustin, McSpadden, Powers, Cleveland and Franz with Gustin well out into the lead.

The final caution of the night would fall with just five laps to go setting up a five lap dash to the checekered. Powers would get past McSpadden for the runner-up position with two laps to go while back up front, the right rear on Gustins modified began going flat. Taking the white flag, Gustins right rear finally went away causing him to exit the track in turn one and giving Powers the lead.

From there it was all Powers as he would go on that final lap to take the three-car lengths victory over McSpadden. Franz would move into the third position late and finish there while tenth-starting Tyler Davis came home fourth. Cody Schniepp slowly worked his way up from his eighth starting position to round out the top five.

The three, ten lap heat races for the 27-car field were won by Schniepp, Gustin and Bryce Schniepp while Treyton Gann topped the night's "B" feature action.

The NCRA modified division will be back in action this coming Saturday night (April 27) at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Kansas where they will be joined by the series two other divisions of crate late models and sprints.
