McGaha/R. White take Ltd Mod qualifiers, Kenny All Star race, Day Factory Stock @ Southern Nats 9-8-17

Elm Mott, TX.,(Sept. 8Th, 2017) After a full night of racing Thursday night it was time to do it all over again and get eight more drivers qualified for the big $10,000 to main event on Saturday. In Thursday action, Robert Scrivner, Justin Whitehead(the two winners), Jeffrey Abbey, Taylor Florio, Justin Shaw, Jacob Pirkle and Gabe Tucker locked themselves in for the big pay day. Brandon Kenny made the transfer after Paul White failed tech in his A-qualifier.

In the Factory Stocks it was Whitehead going home with $500 pay day as well as the Factory Stock All Star Race honors. Fridays Factory Stock payout increased tonight up to $750 for the winner.

Whitehead was the hero of night 1 grabbing almost every win in his sight. The Factory Stock heat, feature and All Star Race winner, plus one of the two Limited Modified qualifier wins. His only hiccup, a second place finish in his Limited Modified heat race.

Greg Frazer provided the scariest moment after got turned into the back stretch wall, climbed it, then rolled several time coming to a stop in the entry to turn 3. Frazer also got tagged several times during crash, but landed upright. Frazer was able to walk away reportedly with only a cut tongue.

Limited drivers again would qualify in through 16 heats taking the top 16 in passing to one, of two, A-qualifiers. Two B-qualifiers will fill the remainder of the A-qualifiers. The A-qualifiers lock 4 drivers each into Saturdays finale. Factory Stocks would run a complete show of heats, B-mains and the nights A-main.

Dennis Bissonette from Dirt Defender gave out #Texasstrong decals for all the drivers and had a banner for everyone to sign. The banner will be auctioned off later with all the proceeds going to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

McGaha Motors into Limited Mod Main

In the first of two Limited Modified A-qualifiers it was Josh McGaha(Abilene) going flag to flag for the win. McGaha led the field into turn 1 at the drop of the green pursued by Jake Upchurch, Shane Hebert, Wally Beaty and Joe Adams. Craig Oakes made an early charge getting by Adams and Beaty for fourth bringing Kelly Lockey along to fifth.

After a string of yellows, the single file restart brought them to halfway showing McGaha, Upchurch, Hebert, Oakes and Lockey in the top five.

Derick Grigsby was making a big run up to the top ten from the back, using the top groove. Grigsby then picked off seventh from Aaron Roy. Upchurch and Hebert closed in on McGaha in the final laps but never mounted a serious challenge leaving McGaha in the Williams Motorsports, All Pro Clutch and Driveline, IRP Chassis to take the checkers.

**A slew of disqualifications in post race tech shook up the final results

“Tonight the track was perfect,” replied McGaha. “Last night the track rubbered up and it made for some aggressive driving. I was one of them. Everyone's going for ten grand. I've had a good time with the Limited Modified, I ran one about five years ago. The Williams family had an extra car and asked if I'd run it this weekend. They've been working their tails off. We come here several times during the year, so we have some laps, but in the big mod.”

White Wins Trip to Limited Mod Main

Rodney White(Ector) took home the win in the second Limited Modified qualifier. At the start Blaine Shives and Cody Smith made some contact with Mike Roach getting out front chased by R. White, JC Howell, Blaine Shives and TJ Green. After Howell spun from third, and Shives retired, R. White and Green stayed side by side for second until R. White secured the spot.

Behind them Bobby Ruffin and Kevin Sustaire were making their way forward. R. White got along side Roach on lap 11 getting the point a lap later, at halfway, with Green, Smith and Ruffin in the top five. R. White then gapped the field until a late debris caution restacked the pack. R. White was able to hold off the pack for the win in the Smileys, Rockin W Ranch, Bryan Agri Products, Emerald, Team Richardson Chassis.

Kenny Captures All Star Scramble

In the wee hours of Saturday morning the Limited Modified All Star Race fired off with Brandon Ball getting the jump from the pole to the lead. Ball was trailed by Wally Beaty, Jake Upchurch, Brandon Kenny and Jacob Pirkle. Kenny worked his way quickly to the front grabbing the lead on lap 5.

Behind Kenny it was Upchurch, Beaty and Pirkle going three wide for fourth until Pirkle bounced off the front stretch wall. Rowdy Day took advantage that fight sneaking past Pirkle and Beaty for fourth, with Dylan Spear following to fifth. At halfway it was Kenny, Ball, R. Day, Upchurch and Spear in the top five.

R. Day used a restart to grab second from Ball leaving him side by side with Spear for third. Don Reid moved up to challenge Upchurch for fifth taking the spot just before a caution. The top three broke away back under green while Reid and Spear ran wheel to wheel for fourth.

As the laps wound down Kenny and R. Day pulled away, white Nick Clinkenbeard moving in to battle with Upchurch and Reid for fifth. R. Day stayed in Kenny's tracks but couldn't find a way by as Kenny in the Roach Body Shop, Boom Test Well Service, Mud Hogs, Ramirez Race Cars held him off at the checkers.

“I really didn't feel that good in the car,” commented Kenny(Woodward, Ok). “I hadn't run the bottom all weekend and really felt slow. I was waiting for someone to drive around the outside of me. I'm pretty pumped. This is awesome. So far, so good this weekend.”

Day Dashes to Factory Stock Dough

In the Factory Stock feature it was TJ Evans leading off turn 2 trailed by Brad Ball, Jeff Sonntag, Trey Votaw and Ricky Sessions. An early spin set up a restart that saw Sonntag get second from Ball with Bo Day following to third. B. Day picked off second from Sonntag and was quickly on Evans for the lead.

B. Day took the top spot on lap 7 while Cameron Cook ran door to door with Ball for fourth. Justin Whitehead, who started back in the pack, tried to split Cook and Ball, but got loose and gave up a spot to Shawn Graham. At the crossed flags it was B. Day, Evans, Sonntag, Ball and Graham in the top five.

Whitehead finally got headed to the front taking positions from Graham and Ball. With five to go Whitehead got third from Sonntag, but was far behind the lead duo. A lap 16 yellow rebunched the field with Whitehead able to snag second from Evans. Whitehead gave chase the final laps but it was B. Day in the Ronnie Welborn owned, Express Fabrication, Quality Intermodal, Best Engines, Ratchet Race Car holding on for the victory.

“I really appreciate Ronnie Welborn letting me drive his car this weekend,” said Day. “In shows like this it takes a lot of luck no matter how fast you are. If you don't have luck on your side you're not going to do any good. You can never count Justin(Whitehead) out. He's a good driver. We started side by side and I knew I had to get to the front fast and just hold my line. He was going to have to go around me on the outside. I wasn't giving the bottom up.”
