USMTS buckles up for Memorial Day Weekend tripleheader

FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. (May 23) -- A tripleheader of events in the RHRSwag.com USMTS Northern Region are on tap for Memorial Day Weekend, May 26-28.

On Friday, the series heads to Fountain City, Wis., to battle at the Mississippi Thunder Speedway, and then it's on to the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., on Saturday before wrapping up the whirlwind weekend on Sunday at the Upper Iowa Speedway in Decorah, Iowa.

One of the most popular weekends and most popular group of racetracks on the USMTS campaign, the series has staged 125 main events between the three locations since 2002.

The 10th Annual "Taste the Feeling" Classic presented by Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Winona happens Friday, May 26, at the Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis.

Nearly ten years ago, Todd Scharkey won the first-ever USMTS race in Fountain City when the track was known as the Tri-Oval Speedway. Kelly Shryock, Brad Waits and Al Hejna also won main events on the old configuration.

Bob Timm took the reins in 2009 and with him came a new configuration for the track, a new clay surface and a new name: Mississippi Thunder Speedway.

Since then, Ryan Gustin has posted three USMTS victories. Although his latest happened in 2011, 'The Reaper' collected $40,000 by holding off Scott Bloomquist in last year's USRA Modified Nationals here.

Brad Waits won in 2011 to become the only driver to get the job done on both the old and new track layout, and Jon Tesch won back-to-back races in 2011 and 2012 to be the only other USMTS multi-race winner at MTS. Tim Donlinger, Tommy Myer, Terry Phillips, Jason Hughes, Rodney Sanders and defending race winner, Zack VanderBeek, each have one victory here.

The pit gate will open at 4 p.m. and grandstands open at 5 with hot laps at 6:30 and opening ceremonies at 7 followed by green-flag action from USMTS Modifieds, Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mods, REDBOX+ 600 Mods, Jailhouse Saloon USRA Hobby Stocks and Harmston Trucking MTS Hornets.

Adult general admission is $20, senior citizens (65 and older) are $18. All students (with valid i.d.) and children ages 17 and under are absolutely free. Pit passes are $35 (6 to 12 years old $15, ages 5 and under free).

The 15th Annual A&A Electric Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge takes place on Saturday, May 27, when the 97th feature race for the USMTS at the Deer Creek Speedway happens.

Kelly Shryock won the first-ever race here on May 25, 2002, but since that night defending USMTS national champion Jason Hughes has a series-best 14 career victories at 'The Creek.'

Shryock is second on the all-time list with 10 wins here while Rodney Sanders has collected eight checkered flags. Tim Donlinger and Terry Phillips have five wins each. Ryan Gustin, Jason Cummins and Brad Waits have four apiece. Zack VanderBeek, Joey Jensen and Brandon Davis have each won three times.

Two-time winners include Corey Dripps, Jason Krohn, Ryan Ruter, Stormy Scott and Lucas Schott. Drivers who have visited Deer Creek Speedway's victory lane one time include Mark Noble, Steve Wetzstein, Darin Walker, Tony Fraise, Dan Daniels, Chad Kinder, Mark Burgtorf, Brad McEwan, Randy Timms, Dean Mahlstedt, Tommy Myer, Mike Sorensen, Mike Spaulding, Dan Chapman, Les Duellman, Mike Hejna, Steve Arpin, Jon Tesch, Jordan Grabouski, Jeremy Payne, Craig Thatcher, Cade Dillard and Tommy Weder Jr.

The pit gate opens at 2 p.m. and grandstands open at 2:30. Slingshots race at 3 on Button Buck Speedway. Hot laps begin at 5:30 and racing starts at 6.

The USMTS Modifieds will share the spotlight with the Iron Man Challenge featuring Holley USRA Stock Cars and Out-Pace USRA B-Mods plus WISSOTA Midwest Mods. Adult general admission tickets are $20 and kids ages 12 and under get in for $5.

On Sunday, the 10th Annual Nordic Nationals presented by Weis Buick GMC takes place at the Upper Iowa Speedway in Decorah, Iowa, and will see the Iron Man Challenge featuring Holley USRA Stock Cars and Out-Pace USRA B-Mods plus USRA Hobby Stocks on the card.

Zack VanderBeek collected his first of three wins at the Upper Iowa Speedway during his rookie campaign in 2005, and his most recent came in this event last year. Jon Tesch, Al Hejna and Ryan Gustin are two-time winners here. Jason Hughes and Johnny Scott have each made one appearance in the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds winners circle.

The pit gate opens at 3 p.m., grandstands open at 4, hot laps start at 5:45 and the first heat race hits the track at 6. General admission is $20, juniors (ages 11-16) are $10 and kids ages 10 and under are free. Pit passes are $35.

Each of the three Memorial Day Weekend blockbusters will dole out $3,000 to the main event winner, with valuable points awarded to drivers in the RHRSwag.com USMTS Northern Region presented by Summit Racing Equipment.

With one race in the books, Jason Hughes leads the RHRSwag.com USMTS Northern Region standings. Zack VanderBeek, Johnny Scott, Cade Dillard, Stormy Scott, Dan Ebert, Kelly Estey, R.C. Whitwell, Kyle Prauner and Jacob Bleess complete the top 10.
