A good CTS Topic

With all the negative talk about CTS closing down figure I would try to lighten it up a little bit here. Tell us all about your favorite or memorable CTS or THR moment.

My most memorable and fun moment at THR for me was racing against my dad. We got paired together in a heat race and we were running 2nd and 3rd when a yellow flag came out. TDCA did the restarts with the leader out front and then double file behind the leader. Dad pulls up next to me and points at me to go low and that he will go high. The green flag comes out he goes high and the leader tries to block him, I go low and pass him, dad gets up to 2nd and stays there blocking for me to win the heat race. Dads car was faster than mine but he chose to stay behind me and as he said "enjoy the show". Later that night in the feature we started next to each other and split a car going down the front stretch as the picture shows and I ran in front of him for a couple of laps. Next thing I know coming out of turn 2 he pulls up next to me going down the backstretch and flips me off, then coming out of turn 4 he passes me waving and then he was gone and I think he finished 2nd that night while I finished 8th. For the ones that new my dad that was the kind of joker he would be, cant count the number of times I pulled up to his starting line at the drag strip where he would give me some kind of hand gesture with his smile. Dad passed away unexpectedly in 2014 and its one of those moments I'll always remember.

FIRST time was a tps race when it was thunderhill .end of the season race .so many cars heat races and all it was darn near 2am before we got our race in ... we won a tps race in 08 only to have it taken away over bs .wont go into that ..but to top all off .my son winning a couple or so races in his purestock and leading the points with a chance of being the first cc racer to win a championship at cts .only to get into a dumb wreck at our home track[ not pointing fingers at any driver ] and breaking a convertor enough to slow the car down speed wise took four or five races to figure out what was going on with that car by that time he had lost too many points and finished 3rd ..with that said for us to travel from here to race as many races as we did .means we loved the track cuz it darn should cost us a ton ..but worth it ..

Can't remember the year, but it was when Brian was still running THR. We were racing the Stock Car Spectacular in our TAMS modified. We had a really good year and lead points most of the year, but late in the year we had 2 DNF's and Jerry Schild moved into 1st. We had a chance to finish out the year on a high note. Sure enough, Jason took the lead about 25 laps into the race with Chris Davidson on his tail. He held onto the lead the remainder of the race until the white flag lap. Coming out of turn 4 going for the checkers he spun out 50 ft short of the finish line. I ask over the radio, "What happened?" He said "I don't know, I think the motor blew." I said "Try starting it, there's no oil or water running out." He said "It just goes clunk, clunk". Back at the shop we found the cam had broken in 3 pieces and the center piece was wedged between #3 & 4 rods. The run was great, but the 3rd DNF-disappointing to say the least.

Chris won the race and Jerry won the points championship. We never ran a season for points again after that.

Just going up there to spend my Saturday evening with all of you and my wife was a great time for me..Me and her stayed the night at the track a couple of times and just slept in our tahoe and i would always laugh when we woke up in the morning because she would always tell me " i didnt realize we were parked so far away from the bathroom" ,

I think my most memorable times though would have to be listening to Brad getting mad at the Front Runners and the Grand Stocks,,, i would be either sitting in the spotter booth or on the track and just LMAO at him up in the booth scolding the hell out of people. i always swore the Front Runners were going to bust the veins his neck the way he would scream at them....

My most memorable at THR was rolling my street stock on the front stretch, landing on the wheels with the engine running, and wanting to keep racing. But they waved me off the track because the windshield had popped out. Wouldn't have gotten far anyway because of other damage. It was exciting, and something I'll never forget.

I was fortunate enough to have a few races at Thunder Hill in late 90s with my Corpus mini stock as an invited car for TPS. My first Scirroco always finished top 3 but later when I switched to the Karman Ghia I did not run as well. My brother also got to try it with Randy Young"s modified.

For my the challenge was not shutting down in turn 1 because there was no turn 1. I finally watched the fast guys and marked where they shut down. I used that mark instead of my "gut" and did much better. What I most remember was the night somebody layered the front stretch with oil and I went the full front stretch backwards. Really a different view. Luckly I did not hit anything.

I still have 2 Dr Pepper sodas with Thunder Hill stamped on the top.

My favorite CTS moment was the wanna say $50000 Texas Spectacular that brought some of the Souths best racers. Chris Davidson ended up winning it then sold his car for I think $30000 once it cleared tech! I have a t-shirt somewhere but it was a great 250 lap(if memory serves) race .

That was the Big Shot 250 they ran twice...Chris Davidson won first and Wayne Anderson out of Wildwood Fla won the last one. It paid $30K to win. Think it was 2001 and 2002..Poorly attended races that I am sure lost major bucks but were fun to watch the best drivers race at. My favorite moment was around 2003 and 04 when Luther New was at turn one in front of the grandstands and something happened to Bobby Joe and they moved him to the back. Luther took his coke can, smashed it against the fence and then reduced it small enough to fit through the chain link and flicked it onto the track. That act alone was better than anyone throwing rocks, full cans, etc etc out of anger. Think he was upset? Many great times there since 1998...sad to see it go.

You said it Mike..." it enriched our lives and cemented friendships" that can't be erased...you either get racing and ALL that goes along with it or you don't. Its more than trophies and such,,,,friendship and good stewardship is a part of it too

I enjoyed the big modified shootout when there was a variety of setups and tires not all on slicks.

Watching Wayne Brooks if I remember right get third on treaded tires in that race. Also the last USA midget and Winston west race. Cars turning under 14 second laps and lots of methanol fumes.

There were some nasty wrecks ...tps race with 22 harry .70 don and that girl in the vw bug off of turn two . jesse nailing john going into turn one full speed just two inches or so behind the drivers door to close to full tbone taking the back of johns car clean off and braking a rib or two on john it shoved the left front tire and wheel through the floor board against the clutch pedal .lucky jesse foot wasn't beside the pedal .I say that was the most scary wreck I have seen there .
