NeilTPS Posted February 26, 2017 Report Share Posted February 26, 2017 My wife Terry and I attended this first Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 22, 1959.We also arrived in time to attend the Late Model Sportsman race on Saturday.The Daytona 500 on Sunday ended in a photo finish. The problem was in those early days of NASCAR, they never anticipated a close finish after 500 miles and had no cameras set up to record the finish. NASCAR requested that anyone with still photos or films taken from any angle during the finish of the race to please submit them for use in their official judgement. Three days after the race, the winner was determined to be Richard's dad, Lee Petty in his #42 Oldsmobile.All Daytona 500 races have shared their place in automobile racing history.We wish all present a safe race on February 26, 2017.Neil Upchurch Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
