I had helped Bruce Mabrito with a few stories back in the early 1980s, but this was my first solo effort. It got cut to pieces by the sports editor who was not a big race fan at the time....

 

Here's the qualifying story as printed in the March 8, 1987 edition of The San Antonio Light
