On Christmas Day, the Whiteaker family lost a precious member of their family. Sixteen month-old Cam Cantu, Stephen Whitetaker Jr's nephew, tragically drowned at a family gathering on Christmas day

Here's the news report from KIII-TV.

ROBSTOWN (KIII NEWS) - The Nueces County Sheriff's Department confirmed Wednesday that one-year-old Cameron Cantu died Christmas Day after he fell into a swimming pool.

Officials said Cantu was playing outside with several children near a pool at a home in the 4000 block of Emil Street near Ware Road when another child noticed that Cantu had fallen into the pool and was struggling to get out. The toddler was pulled out of the pool unresponsive and died while en route to the hospital.

Family members said Cantu's aunt performed CPR on the child until medics arrived.

Cantu leaves behind his mother, Stephanie Whiteaker, father, Kevin Cantu, and eight-year-old brother Brandon.

To help the family during this extremely hard time, South Texas Speedway, located on Old Brownsville Raod in Corpus Christi, will be holding a silent auction on Saturday, January 31st at the Turn 5 Bar, with all proceeds going to the family. Track owner Ken Hobbs is asking anyone who can donate an item for the silent auction to get in touch with the track. Hobbs says he will take all the proceeds and give to the Whitaker family.

"Men can you please ask your office for a coupon, free car wash anything we can auction off Saturday night," said Hobbs. "Ladies can you make something? In this time of need we need to come together. Please help me and donate to our auction. Also, please come Saturday night and bid on some great items. Please share!"

Also, a benefit barbecue will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, at Competition Sounds on South Staples Street in Corpus Christi. Barbecue chicken plates will be sold for $7, and the money raised will help support Cantu's funeral costs and other expenses.

A GoFundMe account has been established to help the family with funeral expenses. https://www.gofundme.com/35j4jp4

Times like this are why I will never walk away from racing....The support I saw this week from close friends all the way to people I just met this week from hours away was amazing....If anyone sees Mike Martin with Five star Motorsports please shake his hand and tell him thanks again from me....Mike sent me a message Wednesday saying he wanted to help the Whiteaker family so I met up with him later that night....when he started writing that check for $10,000 I was speechless and still am....I care about all my racing family so good luck and stay safe in 2017!
And Thank you again Mike Martin!
