Records Fall at the IHRA Northern Nationals Final Round of Qualifying

MARTIN, Michigan (August 13, 2016) - Records were shattered in the final round of qualifying at the Northern Nationals at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan this afternoon. AMSOIL Nitro Funny Car driver Jason Rupert and Pro Modified driver Rickie Smith solidified their spots in the International Hot Rod Association Record (IHRA) record books.

2015 IHRA AMSOIL Nitro Funny Car World Champion Jason Rupert broke the elapsed time record with a 5.57 second pass at 259.22 mph and qualified in the top spot. The record run also gives Rupert 20 bonus points in the championship battle. Mike McIntire Jr. produced a 5.61 second pass at 256.85 mph for the second qualifying spot. Shawn Bowen, Marc White and John Hale round out the top-five in qualifying. In a surprise upset, Mark Sanders smoked the tires and did not qualify for the Northern Nationals.

Rickie Smith has been dominating the Pro Modified class at US 131 Motorsports Park. The number one qualifier broke two world records - a new speed record of 247.25 mph and a new ET record of 5.831. Billy Glidden qualified in the second spot with a 5.89 at 250.98 mph and 2016 IHRA Pro Modified World Champion Billy Harper landed in the third spot; 5.89 at 241.68 mph.

Tracy Kile qualified second with a 6.41 at 219.08 mph. Rickey House, Frank Capone and Jake Stordeur finish up the top-five.
