Nascar

All the NASCAR races I have seen this season have been about as good as it can get. Great side by side racing, 3 and 4 wide..

Jeff Gordon has added a nice touch to the announcing. Always a good wreck or two..

Seems like NASCAR is going to be around for a while longer..

I thought all the NASCAR series races were good. It seems the best drivers shined as it should be. The trucks benefit with the mandatory yellow by breaking up an otherwise predictable finish and the Xfinity series has taken a page from our local racing by incorporating heat races to set the main. And on the cup side it seems like the cars are again needing to be driven like cars rather than relying on air.

Bottom line is NASCAR was smart enough to realize the same old show was not selling so they did things to change it. Maybe we all should learn from this.

Fans in the stands are highly over rated. In this day and time, the big money is made from TV and the internet. The companies buy commercials which sell their products and the internet sells apps and has thousands of webpages that sell advertising that do the same. People buy more over the internet now than the past. There once was day when fans went to the track just to buy a t-shirt or cap. Now they can sit at home, punch a few buttons and have it delivered the next day without having to deal with traffic or those rowdy fans. Many of those products are licensed by Nascar, so I am sure they are selling more merchandise now than pre internet times. People in the stands are basically props for the TV show. There is a reason the TV contracts are so huge, it is made for TV. It is not uncommon for people to hate the guy with all of the brains and ,money.

What an awesome race this weekend

Were we watching the same race?....The first 340 laps were real snoozers....It wasn't until the last 50 did it get exciting....JMHO

Without fans in the stands those tracks won't stay open.....Yes, TV/internet make NA$CAR money, but I doubt much trickles down to the tracks themselves.

And we were doing so good on that other post.....LOL

I am not so sure about the tracks needing fans. They could be built for minimal fans because 65% of the television revenue goes to the tracks, 25% to the purse and Nascar keeps 10. The fans are only a portion of the revenue stream, but not the main one

And when the TV ratings tank, corporate America finds other things to spend their advertising dollars on and networks decide not to spend millions for broadcast rights?

What's left?

The latest TV contract was the largest ever. It was 8.2 BBBBBBillion for 10 years. Not MMMMMilllions. The tracks get 65% of that. So I think Corp America is happy with what is going on. Things could always be better and nothing last forever. We may as well enjoy life while we can, because we all stop breathing at some point. And right now, the cash is flowing like never before in Nascar.

Cash is flowing like never before in NASCAR?

Dollar General is leaving Joe Gibbs and NASCAR at the of this season. Teams are having a harder and harder time finding sponsors. In the late 90's and first decade of the 2000's that's when the money was really flowing well for NASCAR. Now I'm not gonna disagree there has been some great racing this year. But I think that Brian France needs to step back and channel some of his grandfather or father and fix the problem they have. Personally I liked the old cars they had before the Car of Tomorrow it was neat to see those body shapes and designs. I would love to see them bring those cars back and add in more short tracks, as well as dig up the concrete at Bristol and put asphalt back down and let them go back at it. Think about all the great short tracks they have sitting around that could handle 40 cars.

Nashville Fairgrounds

Mrytle Beach

Kern County Raceway Park

South Boston Speedway

Hickory?

Concord?

New Smyrna

Five Flags

This is what I could think of off the top of my head but these would be fun to watch a NASCAR race on.

Shorter races would be fine, if they were willing to drop the picket prices, and the camping prices, and the other associated cost that go along with attending a race. But we know that isn't going to happen. So the race length is fine as it is.

About 5 years ago I read that it cost $20M per car to sponsor a "competitive car" for a year. I sat next to a Office Depot big wheel on a plane in August of 2014 from Austin to LAX. The previous year they had just canned Tony Stewart's sponsorship on the 14 car and moved on from racing...I asked him why? His response was that they did a study of the impact that Nascar sponsoring him had on their business dollar wise and found that they could not measure it. That was the biggest reason they cancelled it. Referring to sentence one of this post, I wonder how much it cost now in 2016?

NASCAR used to be a good deal to sponsor if you sponsored a front running car. That car was on television most of the race so that sponsor got mega exposure. As the ratings kept dropping the value/exposure drops with it.Add to that racing in front of half empty / reduced seating tracks the value/exposure drops there also. Compared to where it was it is harder to keep old sponsors and even harder to gain new ones.

  • 3 weeks later...

No "Boogity, Boogity, Boogity" from DW today. Just a simple "Let's Go Racing".

Its been a very long time since I have seen spoilers that small on a Cup car.

Jr was about the most upset as I have seen him in an interview after being collected by Beuscher trying to save his car.

I think they definitely put more driver back in to the race.
