Most of y'all know me as kind of a crusty old sarcastic ass.....Which I am most of the time, but don't tell anyone, I have a soft side too.

I met this boy at the IMCA Super Nationals with his aunt Kim back in 2004....I still chat with him on facebook occasionally because he loves my racing pictures....He's a big race fan, loves Jeff Gordon, but is a special needs kid that wasn't expected to see this many years in his life. Tonight was a big night for him in another respect, manager of his high school basketball team on senior night.....

What an inspirational story to start the day with . one can never know just how happy this young man is his parents have to be in heaven and hopefully this young man lives on . and I bet not to many dried eyes at that game .. I too have a very soft heart I am proud to admit .I never fail to give to the shriners I believe in them ... once had a friend closely like this young man he was lucky enough to be able to talk and move through most of his 25 years of life that I knew him . he could stand and at times kick a ball .he could talk though hard to understand and took time to learn what most of his words meant . he never complained and laughed at just bout anything just a happy camper ..my brother or I would pick him up and take him where ever he wanted to go and most of it was just to hang out with us or take him for a milkshake his love his mom trusted us and never worried bout him ...his family had to move and lost contact with him .but when I see someone like him it reminds me of him ..this was over 35 years ago . I would like the think he is still alive ...

GIVE to the shriners... ALWAYS teach your children to never look down on a person who is different always welcome them .AND it never hurts to say hello . just may make their day ..

The words "warrior" and "courage" are used a lot in situations that really don't call for their use. Children like this and their parent/parents are what courage and brave define. Stories like this also give hope to humanity and our youth for allowing people like this to be"one of the guys". My grand daughter has to go to Scottish Rite Childrens Hospital in Dallas every now and then for a condition, nothing serious. You walk those halls and see so many children and their parents going through those challenges they face 24/7/365. Then you see the staff and doctors there smiling, upbeat and positive and you see it rubs off on the children and their parents as you can tell they are at a happy place for awhile. When I leave I have to turn and look at the building and think if the courage of the children, the bravery of the parents and the humanity and genuine caring of the staff could be shared by all what a great world it would be.

Tears at work, thanks dad. Whole heartedly agree though. Scottish Rite is similar to Shriner's hospitals for those that don't know. Even at Driscoll here locally, most of the time you can see that too but Scottish Rite is always like that. Yes my daughter's condition is minor compared to what most there are going through and the strength you see is humbling and the caregivers enthusiasm for their work is gratifying to see. I'm so thankful my daughter learned compassion so young and a feeling of being thankful for what she does have. We can all learn from stories like these and forget what "normal" is supposed to be, just enjoy the life you do have.

Don't want to hijack this thread so Reb or Nick if you wish to delete this I understand. Look up you tube and search Jonathan Pitre-The butterfly child E:60. I won't put the link here because it is an intense piece. Warning: 7:45-8:15 is hard to watch. But it illustrates what unbelievable lengths some people go through. After seeing this I haven't complained about ANYTHING since. This boys mother needs to be named a Saint!

AS I LAYED on my back in room 308 at driscoll for three weeks after getting hit by a car . at 15 I didn't give much thought on the true scope of what some have to live with every day .. till then ..sick kids .and some lost their lives the hurt on the parents faces and voices will stay with me aslong as I live ..that changed me to give a damn ...
