HiTech
Never knew who he was .but those pics bring back a lot of memories of the 70s . funny the thing that sticks out is the wide offset wheels they built and seeing those gussets wielded around the centers ........the old fords and chevys a time when racers raced thier brand of autos and bragged about what type of car won or fist fights over it .thanks
Bobby
HiTech - You might appreciate a post I did a few years back on those wheels. If you do a search on "Harold Oatman" and "wheels" you will find it. I tried to post a link but it didn't work.
Nathan
It's funny you mention that they raced there brand. My Grandpa showed me the heads off the motor for the falcon. Ford heads yes completely for not so much. He cut them to fit chevy valves because chevy valves cost less. So a ford/chevy hibrid.
HiTech
Nathan seems like hybrids of ford chevy is still around .. our tps ford 2.3 run 5.7 ROD .the arca head runs the 2.02 chevy plus 100s valves with 454 exhaults ports massive air breathing little head ...makes me wonder if the keys brothers did the same with their 289s they raced for years a mixed breed ..... funny i always wanted to mount a whistle on those gussets to see if they would sound off ...if you notice no window nets or fire suits in most of those on track pics ..man have we come along way .. Bobby
...if you notice no window nets or fire suits in most of those on track pics ..man have we come along way .. No fuel cells. The seats weren't always designed for racing. No age restrictions on the harnesses.

arob
You know the wraps of today are cool but to me they don't match a good hand painted lettered race car. And being from Corpus ,and I bet HiTech will back this,we had one of the best in Pat Johnson. That girl was GOOD! Obviously the Austin guys had a great one ,or ones, too. I'll never forget Mickey Cullen's pink Grand Prix.
Nathan
I agree nothing like the hand painted numbers and graphics.
HiTech
Yes arob I agree with hand painted cars ..pat was really good at that she did a few of mine..my wife didn't do so bad at it either when she started later on .some still see some of my old pics and cant believe how those cars looked after pat or my wife worked their magic ...I wanted her to do Joshuas cars over the years but its hard work and time consuming now and easier to just peel and stick ..I liked lisas car this year other than stick ons the paint was real .problem with paint it is getting hard to find cheap paint now .the paint we have used over the last few years was mistake paint and got it cheap that's how we came up with the green we ran on the 8 .not really the color we wanted .but hey it turned out ok I suppose ..another thing paint is heavy depending on color you have to watch how many layers you put on ...and most paint is clear coat paint so added cost .. see86go
What great memories... thanks for sharing! I loved to watch Buddy race that little Falcon. And, the '57 Chevy with the flames/US flag numbers is one of my all-time favorite paint jobs.
Nathan
the picture of the 57 in highland mall with the ropes around it is one of my favorites.
TexasAggie13
One thing I couldn't help but notice is the number of fans in the grandstands. For example, picture number 39 with the 51 car and a blue car spun on the front stretch. There isn't an empty seat in the stands! It sure is a shame we don't see that more often now. tps48
Nice album! Lots of us have nothing but good memories from those days!
HiTech
WE are showing our age mike .... the young folks today do not know what they missed racing those tanks around the track .it took a lot to beat a body off of em ... I miss the sounds of those 6 cylinders humming and even today they could outrun some of the v8 classes we have now . 283 .327.s 289s and most of those parts were home built .racing has come along way but has lost some of the thrills with it .the one great part is families can now hang out in the pits and be part of everything ..something unheard of when I started going back in the 60s .women and children were not a consideration back then regulated to the stands .
