top_shelf_12
Stewart Smooth Operator at Cotton Bowl The only repeat winner this season for the South Texas Street Stock Shootout added his third victory of the season this past Saturday night on what could be considered his home track. Heath Stewart was one of four drivers dropping to the rear to gain additional points in the Championship Series, Wade Jones, Tommy Gural, and Anthony Gordon were the others looking to capitalize on point leader Marcus Mikulencak's absence. With these hot shoes dropping to the rear, Jeff Schultea and Gary Harris led the field of 20 to the green. Schultea and Harris battled a few laps sided by side with Dennis Bissonnette, Edward Oakes, Brian Rye and Jeff Whitehead on their tale. Kyle Carter and Steven Doty locked into a heated battle as well until the first caution came out early as Michael Moseley spun in 3-4 which left him with a tire rub on the right rear. He would retire a few laps after the restart when the tire went down. Meanwhile, Stewart, Jones, Gural, and Gordon started making their charge to the front. After the restart, Brian Rye started putting pressure on Schultea and even took the lead briefly until retiring in the hot pits with rear end problems. Shortly after Rye pulled into the hot pit area, Schultea started slipping back and those hot shoes started to make their presence known up front. Doty running hard with Carter and a few other cars went into one hot and elected to put himself into the infield rather than collecting other cars and dropped a few positions, settling for a 11th place finish. Meanwhile, Stewart stormed to the front and never looked back. Perennial power Wade Jones never could reel Stewart in, even through lapped traffic who did a great job moving out of the way for the leaders but also racing each other. With Stewart way ahead and Jones looking like he was hot lapping, the race of the night was the three way battle for third between Oakes, Gural, and Bissonnette. Those three raced hard the entire second half of the race and clean. At one point, those three were battling while the lapped traffic of Lewis Blackwood and Matthew Hawken were entrenched in their own heated battle but left plenty of room. But the night belonged to Stewart as he cruised to his third victory of the season adding to his wins from Shady Oaks Speedway and the STXSSS Opener at Cotton Bowl Speedway back in April. The South Texas Street Stock Shootout will return to Corpus Christi and South Texas Speedway August 29th (Make up Race from the Cancelled Race #1 of the Series). It's the only track on the schedule Stewart has not won at but you can bet he's ready to change that. Last STS winner and 3rd place finisher at CBS, Edward Oakes will be looking to add his second win and get into the Championship mix and speaking of Championships, Wade Jones always is tough to beat at STS as he will look to claim yet another Championship. The points battle is heating up as the season enters its final few races. Join us in a few weeks, Saturday, August 29th at South Texas Speedway in Corpus Christi, TX.
