Donny Schatz Outduels the Competition for Boot Hill Showdown Win - Jason Johnson scores a podium finish just his third race back from an injury

DODGE CITY, Kan. - July 4, 2015 - After coming just short of a win the night before, Donny Schatz dominated night two of the Boot Hill Showdown at Dodge City Raceway Park on Saturday night and scored his 19th World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series victory of the season.

"It feels good to get back to victory lane," Schatz said. "This race track was completely different tonight. I didn't know what was going to happen. It got so fast on the bottom last night and I didn't know if it was going to hold up there or not. But wow, it was lightning fast around the top."

Schatz started on the front row with Jason Sides, the previous night's winner. Schatz had the lead in his No. 15 Bad Boy Buggies car by the time the two drivers hit turn one. A caution flag flew early as Joey Saldana was forced up the track. When the race returned to green Schatz maintained his lead.

Over the next ten laps, Schatz worked his way through traffic as Sides worked to hold off Paul McMahan and McMahan worked to hold off Kerry Madsen. The yellow flag flew again on lap 16 as Logan Schuchart slowed on track.

The restart proved pivotal as Sides stumbled and held up the bottom line while Schatz and those behind him surged forward. When the field came back around, Schatz led McMahan and Jason Johnson. As Schatz worked his way through traffic in the closing laps, McMahan tried to run him down but was unsuccessful.

"Starting on the outside really helped tonight getting the jump on (Jason Sides)," Schatz said. "Had a really good car. It was awful tight there most of the race but that's a good thing for me. I try to do my best and tonight it got us a win."

After a season so far that has been up and down, McMahan said the second place finish felt good for he and his CJB Motorsports team. He credited his crew chief Barry Jackson and his team members for working hard night in and night out to overcome bad luck and find their stride.

"We've been working every day and Barry has been working every day trying to figure out what it is and I think we found some things on our CJB racecar tonight," McMahan said. "Our pill draw hasn't been the greatest, we've been qualifying just outside that front row or not in that good spot to make the dash and then you've got to start so far back. And then you've got to chase guys like Donny down. I'm just happy to actually be in the same race he was tonight. He didn't get away from us - lap traffic was pretty tricky."

After a nearly three month hiatus from the series following an injury at Placerville Speedway in April, Jason Johnson proved yet again tonight that he is back in old form. The reigning American Sprint Car Series champion, who is making his first full campaign with the Outlaws this season, started on the pole and finished in the top five on night one of the Boot Hill Showdown and then closed out the weekend on Saturday with a podium finish in third.

Johnson said the finish means a lot for his No. 41 Priority Aviation/Mesilla Valley Transportation team.

"Even though I was out, my guys worked their tails off and using the different drivers throughout the time I was out, they capitalized on the good things that we learned from each guy," Johnson said. "I'm still the same driver I was three months ago but these guys have advanced really far. I can't say enough about Phillip Dietz our crew chief and (crew members) Cole and Blaine, they're doing a good job. The team is gelling and we're surrounded by great people… I want to thank everybody for their support while I was out and I'm happy to be back."

Kevin Swindell was the night's KSE Racing Hard Charger, advancing six positions to finish in 14th.

No Stopping Schatz in Boothill Showdown Finale

by Lonnie Wheatley

DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 4, 2015) – After finishing second in Friday night’s “Boothill Showdown” opener, Donny Schatz improved one position to top Saturday night’s 30-lap World of Outlaws Sprint Car feature atop the 3/8-mile Dodge City Raceway Park clay oval.

The North Dakota native gunned into the lead at the outset and led all the way aboard the Tony Stewart Racing / Bad Boy Buggies No. 15 for his 19th overall series win of the season and third career DCRP triumph.

“It feels good to get back in victory lane,” Schatz said after posting the $10,000 triumph. “It definitely helped to start up front tonight, it would have been tough to come from very far back.”

While Schatz enjoyed World of Outlaws laurels, Alan Brewster captured his first career “A” Main win by topping the IMCA Sport Modified feature and Canadian Wally Butler bested the Colorado Lightning Sprint feature.

After Joey Saldana got into the turn four wall on the initial start of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car feature, Schatz outgunned pole starter and Friday night winner Jason Sides at the drop of the green flag for the early lead.

Schatz zipped around the track on the preferred high line with Sides, Paul McMahan, Kerry Madsen and Jason Johnson in tow over the first half of the race until a caution flew after 16 laps when Logan Schuchart came to a stop in turn four.

Schatz elected the top side on the double-file restart and immediately raced back out front with McMahan and Jason Johnson taking advantage of the high line as well to shuffle Sides back to fourth.
McMahan tried to reel in Schatz as traffic once again came into play in the final handful of circuits, but Schatz successfully navigated by a couple of cars to put the win away.

McMahan settled for runner-up honors in the CJB Motorsports No. 51 with Johnson third in the Priority Aviation No. 41. Sides settled for fourth after holding down second for the first half of the race with Kerry Madsen rounding out the top five.

Daryn Pittman climbed a handful of positions to sixth with fellow Oklahoma native Shane Stewart in seventh. Brad Sweet and David Gravel were next across the stripe in eighth and ninth, respectively, with Saldana bouncing back from his opening lap incident to complete the top ten.

Saldana set the night’s quick time of 12.480 seconds in qualifying with Stewart, Gravel and Sides winning the heat races.

In IMCA Sport Modified action, Alan Brewster survived a late run by Clay Money to become the eighth different winner in as many events by winning the 20-lap main event.

With Brewster leading from the outset after starting on the pole, Money had to work his way forward from tenth. Money was only up to seventh by the midway point and was fifth on lap 14.

Money began picking off cars in the final rounds, making it up third by the 17th round and then into second by the white-flag lap. His charge to the front fell just short though, with Brewster taking the checkered flag by just a pair of car-lengths.

Eric Pfiefer, Bart Baker and Jeff Kaup chased the lead duo across the stripe.

In Colorado Lightning Sprint action, Manitoba’s Wally Butler raced into the lead on the seventh round and survived some late challenges to take the win in the 30-lapper.

While Butler started on the front row outside, it was pole starter Johnny Boos racing into the lead at the drop of the green flag. Boos stayed out front for just six laps though before Butler took command.
Butler held off the advances of Troy Ullery until Ullery encountered problems with less than ten laps. Rick Hench moved in to challenge as well over the final handful of laps, however Butler was up to the task and preserved the win.

Butler cross the stripe ahead of Hench with Roland Bernard, Boos and Glenn Waterland in the top five.

Action resumes at Dodge City Raceway Park on Saturday, July 18, with the $1,200-to-win Third Annual Modified Stampede along with IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and IMCA Hobby Stocks.
